Motion City Soundtrack Setlist at House of Blues, Chicago

 

Damn, nothing from Go or Panic Stations?

 

Justin doesn’t think that the songs from Go translate well to live shows, and I don’t think they believe anything from PS counts as crowd pleasers. Personally I would love some cuts from both. But we’ll see how the rest of the tour unfolds! I believe they were still debating the set list yesterday

 

I don’t want to look at the setlist because I’m seeing them tomorrow night, but this doesn’t surprise me. They only played one song from each when I saw them during their 2016 tour (True Romance & Anything at All)

 

Days will run away and I can feel you should be on the setlist :/

At this point anything they play is a bonus for me since I didn’t expect we’d see them playing shows again so soon. That farewell show was my favorite show ever and I’m just psyched to get to relive a little bit of it this month.

 

I’m very down with that setlist and very excited to see them Monday!

 

It’s a Pleasure to Meet You would be an incredible set opener.

 

I wonder if it’s also due to Panic Stations being the album Tony wasn’t around for.

 

I’m sure I’m in the minority on this, but the most recent song they played last night is 10 years old. And 17 songs were from 2007 or earlier. I love the old stuff as much as the next guy, but Go and Panic Stations are both hugely important records to me, and I’m sure, a large amount of fans. But even beyond my own personal tastes, I don’t know how to feel about them leaning into being a legacy/nostalgic act like this. Even a band like Weezer will play a song or three they’ve recently released, even as the crowd is screaming for more Blue and Pinkerton. If they’re happy and most fans are happy, I guess that’s fine. But personally, I’d love to see more than a full set of songs from 2010 back from them in 2020.

 

It seemed like they used to always throw 1-2 songs from each record in the Setlists when they weren’t promoting those records prior to the breakup. Days Will Run Away is such a good song too

A big concern I have: if the fans have communicated they don’t care about anything past 2010, and they’re listening by avoiding songs from those records, what possible motivation would they have to make new music?

 

I do wish something from Go was played. Otherwise I’m cool with it. This is a “reunion” tour. This may be it again for a while, right? Do what’s the most fun then. It makes total sense that CTTM gets a great reaction from the crowd and the band surely thrives on that reaction.

If they stick around and do another tour later in the year in the same cities with the same set, then I’ll be concerned. Until then, I’m gonna have so much fun in 2 weeks.

 

My guess is they become similar to a band like The Early November. A new album every 3-4 years, a month or two of touring a year, and a handful of festivals/one-offs each year. Basically where they were before the breakup, but now without the pressure or expectation to do more.

The show was so fantastic. It really just had a great energy in the room and was so amazing to see the guys on stage again. I'll tell you in the moment, I had no qualms at all about the setlist in the moment. I'm so happy Disappear was the last song they played before midnight, since it was basically the first song I loved this decade (I mean technically it came out 2009, but I listened obsessively until the album released) so it was really cool for it to be the last song I heard of the decade.

In hindsight, I do wish they would've digged a little deeper. I feel like anyone who casually wanted to see them for nostalgia could've/should've on the farewell tour. Even just one song from Go and/or Panic Stations would've been nice, but I mean I also get why they didn't since people made it very clear how they feel about those albums. I wouldn't expect the setlist to stay exactly the same going forward though, so hopefully they get more adventurous now that the big reunion is over. But damn I really want new music now. It's just going to be really interesting to see what they do going forward.

This post is exactly why I’m worried. You just said the fans have made it clear how they felt about the last two albums. And you also want new music.

I also want new music (and loved the last two). But if the fans made it so clear they don’t want to hear music from the last decade live, why should make new music? What’s the point of putting all that work and money into something the fans won’t want to hear live anyway, because they just want to hear old stuff?

I’m not sure the band is in a great place at this point. People don’t love Motion City Soundtrack; people love who Motion City Soundtrack was from 2003-2010. And I’m not sure where that leaves them as a real band in 2020.

 

They just have to not give a shit and play a few newer songs for themselves and the group of people who like them if they want to move forward as a band in any way. Otherwise it'll get old fast.

 

idk a lot of bands from this era or earlier just do a tour once or twice a year playin the hits and its a good monetary supplement for them and they can still play roughly the same size venues without putting out new music, I don't think I would really have a problem w that.

I feel like those last two albums, regardless of how much I may like them, kind of killed the band in a big way.

 

I mean overall ya I kinda agree. I meant a little shade with it when I said the fans made it clear what they wanted. I'm not one of those fans, I love both those albums and still don't get why people didn't enjoy PS more. But I also think if they do plan to release more music (which I'm really not sure whether they do or not) they are probably hoping to use the reunion as a reset of sorts. So right now they're playing into nostalgia, reminding people of their first four albums, then if they announce an album after this tour, there will be a little more buzz about it. Plus they have the advantage of being able to say it's the first album Tony is on since 2012.

There are just a ton of variables right now. But no matter what, I'm at peace just knowing anything else - whether it's just this last run of shows, MCS touring as a nostalgia act every couple years, or if it's actually new music - is basically a bonus. Anything is better than nothing, and as long as they are happy, I am happy.
