  1. I can’t get over that no one is talking about this on any nerdy podcast I’ve heard yet. (Only on my second right now.) But it’s driving me insane.

I also had people telling me that putting TLJ above ROTS was laughable and a reach. So I guess the moral of the story is people have differing opinions when it comes to entertainment.

I have TLJ in my top 2. I’m just in the camp that thinks the prequels are quite horrendous.

Eh if you liked it that much as a kid you’ll probably still find it enjoyable at the least

I’ve enjoyed talking about Star Wars in this thread, but at the same time, I keep coming back & thinking about how frustrating this film was. I’m considering taking RotJ Luke & TLJ Rose’s advice & hiding this thread, so I can stop letting Palpatine’s hate flow through me, lol.

It’s very clear to me how much more Rian and I agree on what it means to be in tune with the force and a Jedi, than J.J. and I. J.J. seems to think as long as you have a cool death stick, and it’s not red, you’re Gucci.

Planning to discuss it on Geekdom but the episode won’t be out until next week. How dare people be busy during the holidays!!

Rian Johnson understands Star Wars in the same way the Empire creative team understood Star Wars. He knew what about it was special and meaningful and impactful, what was worth keeping and building upon, and what required jettisoning. For the millionth time, we did not deserve RJ/TLJ.

anyone else find it jarring to hear the new characters say "Palpatine" with such fear and conviction?

I can’t even imagine how incredible this trilogy would have been if Johnson had done them all. Would’ve been legendary.

  14. Listening to a podcast go over the plot and how it really is a fetch quest of like three places where the villain shows up a few minutes later each time saying he’d take you to the place you’re trying to get anyway is really hammering home the bones of this movie falling apart for me.

Finally watched it this morning and while I can understand the hate it’s getting, I enjoyed it.

I’ve been making my way through the thread and reading reactions, and one thing I read that I wanted to respond to (though I forgot who posted it) was the problem with why Palpatine, who wanted to pass down the power/knowledge of the Sith to Rey, would want Snoke to have her killed. But, if I’m not mistaken, the ultimate plan was to always mold Kylo into the perfect successor until Palpatine learned of Rey’s abilities/potential, right?

Anyway, some things didn’t work and just like many others, the lack of consequences do sort of spur some of the more tense parts for me, but in no way did I actively dislike anything.

I don’t wanna be too nit picky but I legit loled at the fact that someone apparently created this dagger that perfectly aligns with fucking ship wreckage but also only if you are standing at a certain angle but also doesn’t tell you where to stand you just gotta get lucky but of course you’re standing at the right spot because movie

Some things you can’t explain your way out of except for “because the movie needs to happen” and I can usually forgive these things for properties I like

I totally understand why people can have the opposite perspective of “because I love this property, I need this to make more sense” lol

I’m very forgiving of things like that, especially in a Star Wars movie. But it was laughable

Honestly, The Last Jedi is actually a pretty awesome and satisfying end to 'The Skywalker Saga'. Works for me at least. Maybe not from a plot / storylines standpoint, but certainly from a thematic and legacy standpoint.

I'm not saying I am ready to completely write Rise off and pretend it doesn't exist, I'm just saying that I feel like if you hated it enough that you wanted to do so, TLJ is a pretty awesome ending.

    Oh no doubt

Also, was it explained whether the dagger was made before or after the destruction of Death Star 2? Because if the knife came first, then it really doesn’t make sense because you’d have to know the exact layout of the remains of a Death Star that hasnt even been destroyed

I feel like there is absolutely a way to accomplish the same goal with better writing that avoids the fetch-quest and ridiculously lucky artifact altogether, they just felt like this movie needed the excitement and drive this type of plotting allegedly drums up.

I kinda feel like Palpatine was able to remain in hiding so-to-speak not simply because nobody had happened or managed to find all the magic triangles and daggers yet, but moreso because the entire galaxy thought he was dead and so nobody was looking for him.

  23. “Being better writers” is a fine answer. Or making a movie that doesn’t pull you so far out of it you think about it too much works too.

Like, I can’t say I hated this cause I was relatively entertained for 2 hours but they really upped the dumb in this one. There is something called a Sith Wayfinder. It’s so on the nose. It’s just interesting to watch the OT where plot is driven by character motivation and in this movie the plot moves forward strictly for MacGuffins. I’m sure this has all been said so I really don’t feel like I’m adding anything but

Not to mention it just so happens to be the murder weapon used on her parents.
