Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (J.J. Abrams, December 20, 2019) Movie • Page 324

  1. Shower thoughts:

    1) Dark Side Rey has literally the most inefficient and stupid lightsaber design ever. In the “closed” state with both lit is dumb. Closed state one lit is dumb. LOL. What a total form over function and even the form is silly move. I forgot about it because of the whole stab thing that comes next.

    2) why didn’t Rey just lie to Kylo? They need to know where this planet is. He wants to take her there. A little “sure I’ll join you” and you get there days or weeks earlier?

    Liked
    - that first sequence with Rey/Kylo on the desert planet. The the flip, and saber slash were great. The ship pulling, and force lightning surprised me.

    - Bendemption was done alright I thought. His moment with Han was nice.

    - all the nods. That shot of Jaku got me all giddy, and then Bespin. Deathstar wreckage was really cool too. Plus Tatooine put a nice little bow on all the call backs I thought.

    - All the force conversation/battles with Rey, and Ben. Nice touch of things coming back, and forth between their two locations. Thank God JJ didn’t axe ALL of Rians stuff from TLJ.

    - The pacing. They jumped from planet to planet wayyyy to fast.

    - new characters all being a waste. We’re introduced to two or three, and then never get anything more from them.

    - Palpy being a retread, and not done in an interesting way.

-Snoke backstory. So lame. We didn’t need one.

    - The kiss. I was dreadddding it when they were that close. I kept thinking please don’t!

    - Hux was a waste.

    - It got so chessy during that last space battle. Poe just yelling lame things to everyone.

Overall I liked it. Just wish JJ had a spine.

why is Rey’s character or her arc ruined? Again, I don’t love the execution, but it sounds like some would only be satisfied if Rey was a nobody. Like, there is no other option that would be appropriate for her arc.

I can’t find the tweet right now, but someone put together three photos of drinks and said each was a sequel trilogy movie.

It’s was a coke classic, tea, and a monster energy drink.

Why was Finn all of a sudden force sensitive? He felt Rey die? Also did we ever find out what he wanted to tell her?

Charlie Pace said they should do Holdo maneuvers at the new fleet and I think Poe said that was a one in a million type thing.

There are so many articles that say it better than I do. Jason’s write has 2 linked that say it incredibly well.

    Right? Seems literal.

@FlayedManOfSF I will give you the fact that it is not verified that Palpatine created Anakin. Fine. (Though one guys veiled comment about a comic also isn’t the definitive and final word.)

That said, I think it’s intellectually dishonest to say that Anakin was a “nobody.” He is literally the chosen one.

I dunno. I guess they claim that’s what awakened him from his programming. It’s the same instinct that Jannah and her deserters had. Which I guess implies a lot of them are force sensitive?

I saw a reddit post quote J.J. that it was that he was force sensitive I haven’t seen an actual source yet though.

Those are good. How about this: how did Kylo get back to Exogol? Did he have the coordinates memorized?

Oh yea! I had that thought at some random point but never posted it. How did he get there? Doesn’t really seem like the kind of thing you could memorize as it was a path and not merely one light speed jump.

Well sue me guys, I liked it a lot... lol

I thought JJ did very well with what he was given... the first bit of the movie was a bit chaotic, sure, but I never felt like there wasn’t a narrative or purpose for what was happening.

Still not sure why, or rather HOW, they brought the Emperor back but, it is what it is... and for what it is, I think it was fine. They harkened back to TLJ just enough for it to serve a purpose as well, so overall I really thought it was a solid way to wrap it up.

    Good fun at the movies...

He was given essentially a blank slate in a lot of ways. Not sure why I keep seeing that comment at times. Johnson had his hands tied way more.

Luke ghost was reallly bad too I thought. His last appearance in TLJ was much more impactful

I would have been fine with him being a force ghost, but it was not done well imo

I have a punch up for the final shot of this movie.

Rey’s dramatized introduction is all about how alone she is: she eats and scavenges alone, she’s waiting for parents who are never gonna come, she has no friends. That changes when she meets BB-8 and Finn. So if you’re gonna have this ending at the old Skywalker homestead, sure, have her bury the sabers, alone, looking longingly around the empty space. Then, as she’s gazing into the two suns, have her turn as she notices something, and Finn walks into frame with her. She smiles, he smiles, BB-8 looks up at them happily. They gaze into the two suns together. The end.

the rest of the movie would still be doodoo but the final thesis would at least tie back to something unique about Rey instead of just having her echo a shot from a much better movie
