She didn't even consciously use them there. She was near death, it was like an autopilot thing.

  2. Seems pretty heavily implied she’s done at least some training with Luke. TLJ book has her creating fire with it and taking about it.

Really my only complaint about this movie was how rough the CGI was in that scene. It took what should have been a beautiful, epic moment and made it into a meme for people who couldn't look past it. And I consequently have had to hear nerds complain about how bad it looked for the last two years.

I remember back in the 90s as a kid watching the ROTJ special edition and thinking how cool it would be for Luke to go back and train Leia to be a Jedi as well. As an adult I get that Leia was more interested in political leadership than becoming a Jedi but it still would've been badass to give Carrie more prominent Force abilities in the sequels.

  5. A lot of the Expanded Universe stuff had her learning more about it but ultimately being more interested in the politics instead. Some interesting stuff there, but they seemed to lean into the same sort of thing here ... she knows how to do some stuff, but she's never spent the same time training at it to be as good as a Jedi.

In the EU she completes her Jedi training later on in life.

Is this the old EU stuff or the current? I haven't read any of the new books except for Resistance Reborn, which I'm almost done with.

Haven't they basically said she was going to go full fledged force in the next movie before Carrie passed? Seems like it was setup for that.

  10. The old "Legends" stuff, I still call it the EU for whatever muscle memory reason.

Ah, ok. I don't know why but I never got into any of the books growing up. I always just stuck with the movies. It was almost a relief when they said everything pre-2012 wasn't canon because it was like a fresh start and I could hop on with the new stuff. And then I never read any of the new stuff either lol. Only reason I picked up Resistance Reborn is because it directly leads into TROS.

  12. I read quite a few when I was younger. I really liked the original Heir to the Empire series as a kid. Then I just read all the Wikipedia stuff about what happened later because I never kept up. Some crazy shit.

Leia, Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray implied her using the force when she was younger. Didn’t seem like intentional use of it on her part, but it shows a previous connection.

  15. Saw this one and VII last night at a theater. Removed from any preconceptions and the backlash, I was able to finally get into it deeply and I think this might be my favorite Star Wars movie ever? At this point, I'm much more familiar with this trilogy than the original one so...

Can't count how many times I got teary eyed, be it at the Yoda scene, the "You're holding on" one, Luke's last speech. I could go on and on, goddamn this movie is such so powerful. The complaints I first had turned out to be minor afterall.

I'll try never watching it in French again as some of the voice actors made the characters way cornier than the actual cast, especially Rose, Hux and DJ. I'm even more confused by the initial backlash now...

I watched TFA and TLJ this week. So good!!

The only substantive gripe I have about them is they're both way too long for me. And maybe poorly paced, but I think that's a consequence of the length.

TFA is poorly paced? I can see some people may not dig the pace of TLJ, but TFA? Explain, please.

It's been really fun watching the whole series in order. I got to the Force Awakens last night but still have like 45 minutes left because I got too sleepy. But it really reinvigorated my love for the new trilogy. I really love Rey and Finn so much, and them meeting Han Solo is just so cool. And I just really enjoy the way Han's character arc went, and I think it was really colored out with Solo and TFA. I'm super excited to get to the Last Jedi and I have high hopes for ROS too. Plus I've got to watch the new Mandalorian episode too so I'm on a huge Star Wars high.

For me the first 40 minutes are magical but the middle 55 minutes wanders. I enjoy each of the sequences (even the Rathtars) but the momentum of the first 40 shmears into a meandering series of mystery boxy vignettes and I don't feel like the narrative tension escalates very much through that act. We're still on our way to find Luke, but that goal recedes to the background for a while. Is it even an act? What's the break? Rey's vision? Firing Starkiller Base? Both of those events occur somewhat outside the story we're experiencing, visually and emotionally striking as they may be.

And then we get to D'qar and act 3 is telegraphed comedically like, "Starkiller Base...isn't there a way to blow it up? There always is." I like that joke even, but the joke undercuts a sense of drama, like "now's the part of the star war where we go blow shit up". It feels like a chore more than a dramatic culmination of the story. It doesn't help that the aerial battle is pretty unmemorable. When I watch the movie, I'm thrilled for 40 minutes, my excitement is tempered but engaged for the next hour and then by the time we get to Starkiller Base, I'm less excited.

    Regarding Act 2 more specifically:

There are several breather scenes nearly in a row, and I don't think the story needs them all:

    - Rey & Finn "you did great! no you did!" for 1 minute
    - Rey & Finn meet Han & Chewie for 3 minutes then we get 7 minutes of Rathtar action.
    - Snoke scene (this one isn't exactly a breather, but it's an exposition dump without any visual motion)
    - Han talks about the force for 3 minutes
    - Han talks about hiring Rey for 3 minutes
    - Cantina scene with Maz for 8 minutes

Then we get 15 minutes of action; rey's vision, Starkiller base blows up a buncha planets, and the battle on...whatever Maz's planet is called.

Then we get some character activity with Han and Leia, Rey uses the force on Daniel Craig, and a mission briefing for the final act.

It all "works" in a storytelling sense, for me it's not as strong as the OT middle acts, although to be fair, Return Of The Jedi barely has a middle act.

    Anyway, hopefully that makes sense?
