Yea, it's more jump scares (which I prefer when it comes to horror)

Good to hear. We watched the first episode, looks like it'll be a great show. She handled that one no problem, it sounds like there shouldn't be an issue then. Thanks all!

so Darling kind of fell flat for me. at times it really seemed like Mickey Keating was paying too much homage to The Shining (i found myself thinking more about that film than the one i was even watching) but this may have just been me. i really wanted to like it a lot more than i did. i thought the performances were all great (i really think that Lauren Ashley Carter is great), i just felt like at times it was trying too hard to be different. still looking forward to Carnage Park.

  4. I saw Darling this past weekend by accident and did not think it was very good at all.

ok - watched The Strangers again - happy to say it remains pretty damn solid. this is the unrated edition, not sure it's technically the director's cut but i assume it's the most official representation of the director's vision (this was his first experience in directing).

its strengths lie, as remembered, in its naturalistic style. it's a distillation of the home invasion sub-genre, in perhaps as realistic a series of events and actions as i can think of. the victims behave semi-rationally - doing the smart, survival-savvy thing, but sometimes in the haze of going into shock. the killers behave like they understand their victims, but there are really nice moments where you see them making mistakes like when Liv leaves the barn and is crawling on the ground, and watches the man looking towards the barn because he thinks she's still in there because they're not meant to be omniscient.

its weaknesses are that it sometimes seems to forget that, or falters. imo, the soundtrack should have been nixed beyond in-universe music - something they do in several terrific scenes, but the soundtrack creeps more and more into the film until it's basically like any other. the sound effects should have been minimized more, perhaps as much as possible - this one's hard to say because i know test audiences don't always respond well to it, but certainly there were shots where the sound of a blade sliding on carpet made a metal noise and i was like "that's not right at all," or where sounds traveled unrealistically far. oh, and the fucking slow-mo... that's a design decision made several times that i just do not understand - it's prevalent enough that i wonder if Bertino even was actually making the film for the reasons that I love it. i'm generally against special effects, but 100% they had no place here.

the general use of real-time was excellent; i love slice-of-life so it's something i tend to really pay attention to. i think, again, it should have been even MORE implemented - cut the flashback (I think there was only one) and you have, essentially, a seamless series of events. the flashbacks were not expositional, and although they did expand on the characters, it wasn't in any significantly interesting direction. the script, similarly, seemed a little TOO explanatory for its own good; trust the audience to understand the (pretty straightforward) intro and pare it down further or use that space to start twisting the knife even more subtly earlier on. edit: forgot the framing of the narrative, where we start with the boys discovering the house. cut that shit out. it's so standard, it weakens the natural angle the film is taking, it's not scary in the slightest, and it doesn't really build on anything. the ending, similarly, could have done without that particular frame closing.

long story short: a standout film in the sea of slashers it waded in with, but i understand why it was mostly seen as any other. i'm not even entirely certain if it intentionally was different from the rest, but a lot of the pieces are here, so I'm pretty sure where they stepped back into line with generic horror, it was either to studio pressure, out of uncertainty, or out of a need to meet test audiences.

Not my favorite anthology. Like any, some shorts are better than others. But the Easter segment was worth the time alone.

  24. February (re-titled The Blackcoat's Daughter) was pretty good.

I consider horror the genre that interests me the most, but man I really can't get into a lot of the modern releases out there. No interest in shit like Insidious or the Conjuring or Lights Out, that type of horror doesn't do anything for me. I suppose I need a lot of humor/camp in it to draw me in rather than scares/paranormal stuff. Haven't found a recent film that hit me like that in a while. Maybe The Guest, if that counts?
