Hot take: the "finished" version of 1996 is a top 5 BN song

I literally just let out an audible fuck when I looked at the lyrics to aloC acoC. Somebody on reddit sent me what I assume is the official rip from the Sowing Season single *kind chap/gal*. I cannot believe I've gone like 5/6 years without listening to this, and had no idea how dark the lyrics were.

I loooooove Coca Cola. Always enjoyed it way more than Brothers, which apparently is opposite of most of the fanbase. But the new Brothers song I love because I feel like it captured some of the vibe of Coca Cola.

Yeah, absolutely! I'm at odds with the fanbase regarding Moshi Moshi - it's the one Brand New song I really cannot get on-board with. It sounds like karaoke to me. I was so happy during the 2015 intimate UK tour that they opted not to play it. (Jesse had played it most nights before Soco, but instead chose to do like a 10 minute extended Soco)

Moshi Moshi always reminded me of Weezer. I can get on board with it

It was posted on AP.net back when he released it. This is why when Brand New ends I don't think it'll be the end of Jesse. I think he'll sporadically release stuff like this for a long time to come.

I can see him producing stuff. They did build that studio... I just can't see it going to waste after the band breaks up.

Bet he produces a Greater Pyrenees album...and I'd love for him to get his hands on a Manchester Orchestra, Thrice or mewithoutYou album

I liked Kevin Devine's Bubblegum a lot, so I wouldn't mind seeing Jesse try his hand at producing some.

I remember buying Deja Entendu and AFI "Sing the Sorrow" on the day Deja was released, Sing the Sorrow never stood a chance of getting played.

That is indeed a bold statement. Between "Noro" (which I still maintain is severely underrated), "PCTS," and "Soco Amaretto Lime," they have three insanely great closers (I also love "Handcuffs" but it's the clear fourth place finisher among these songs). Don't know which one I love most.

All three might be top-10 Brand New songs for me.

That'd be pretty great. My wife and I had our first dance to the Daytrotter version of Hellogoodbye's "Oh, It Is Love".

I wonder what a Jesse Lacey-produced Hotelier record would sound like.

I haven't listened to Bubblegum so I'm not sure how good he is as a producer.

Check out Brand New's Instagram. They're giving away a signed Demos album or something!

EDIT - to the next person who buys an Old Blood Noise Pedal at East Side Music Supply. Also an IAAN single being given away.

I don't think anyone has explicitly addressed the reasoning for the alternate track list, but I believe it is based around the theory that TDAG is a concept album about the life of the girl who dies in Limousine, and the story begins at Welcome to Bangkok.

I've never understood that. Like why wouldn't they just make the track listing like that then?
Also - that is one of the albums biggest concepts regardless of which order you look at the songs (be it the real order or "alternate")

For me, the tracklist is unquestionably better the way it is, so if it is a concept album, the band could have made the creative decision to reorder the tracks into a more pleasant listening experience. I think Coheed has done this with some of their albums.

Not saying I actually think it's a concept album, though. I won't believe it unless the band says it themselves.

I think the original idea came from the design of the physical CD.

    forbidden chalice.

I remember reading a fan theory way back that the alternate track listing starts with the departure of Deja Entendu (Welcome To Bangkok), introduces the story of a man who experiences a divorce (Not The Sun) and then delves into obsession for the person they lost (Luca, "Just let me know where you been" + Untitled). With the lack of communication with his ex, he goes into paranoia (Archers, "You're screaming so loud you barely joyous, broken thing") in which he stumbles into regret and becomes suicidal (Handcuffs, "I'd drive this car off of the bridge if I knew you weren't inside"). Because of this, his life changed for the worst while still missing her (Sowing Season, "Been losing all my friends" + "Do you miss the blend..."). His depression gets worse (Millstone) and even loses the sight of religion (Jesus). He goes out drunk and causes the in real life incident of Limousine and then in You Won't Know, he becomes so full of regret that he offs himself.

I think with this tracklisting you really need the bonus track of "Luca (Reprise)".

EDIT: To come right after "You Won't Know". I don't think "You Won't Know" is a good closer.
