Carnifex and JFAC are also bands that transitioned well (though they're more deathcore than metalcore). Atreyu it just does not work. There was some praise for their new album but I don't feel it at all.

I was never a big Atreyu fan back in the day, but I really stopped liking them a couple years ago. They made a Facebook post that rubbed me the wrong way. It was probably 2012 or 2013. They hinted at reuniting and asked fans if they wanted a new song in their old style and said something along the lines of "no more of that major label corporate rock BS" which baffled me. It's like blatantly admitting your integrity was compromised for two album cycles and fans should just get over it.

I can't find it on their Facebook and a Google search turned up nothing, but it was definitely there at one point.

here's a list of Djent albums I love or like so far:

    Meshuggah - Nothing
the best djent album (band) ever; no one can touch them in terms of complexity, melody, heaviness and those motherfucking guitar solos

Glass Cloud - Perfect War Forever
heavy and relentless AF, I can really appreciate this blunt approach and would like to hear more shit like this

    Cloudkicker - Beacons
not that heavy, but really cool and melodical // I also like their recent post-rock approach (although I doubt it's really djent)

    Vildhjarta - Mastaaden
    sick riffing, sick, sick

    Uneven Structures - Februus
kind of atmospheric and I like that; not that into the clean vocals and prog leanings, but some really cool moments

I also kind of like this deathcore track, even though it's cheesy as fuck LOL:

and this is just ridiculous in a very fun way [avoid if the idea of a djenty Linking Park sounds awful to you (but don't avoid it)]:

don't tell me that the part that begins at 3:11 (LOL 311) with the synths isn't sick

I also unironically enjoy Hacktivist. Make Them Suffer are a great band as well, totally underrated outside of the deathcore scene.

Alex was on the 100 Words or Less podcast a few years ago and vented about that a little. Said they were being talked into doing things they weren't comfortable with and that "it was the closest thing to selling out I've ever done." Also said that "Falling Down" was his least favorite song to play live but they still did it because it was popular. He also said something like "we're better when we're left alone in the studio and don't have a dork behind a glass wall telling us what to do." on Brandan Schieppati's podcast not too long ago.

Yeah, I'm happy they've attempted to return to their earlier style, but the damage is long done. I'd reckon the rapid change in their sound between Death Grip and Lead Sails was actually what made people lose interest the first time around. That was one of the biggest cases of "selling out" backfiring on a band. I remember when Lead Sails came out the response on Myspace from fans was almost unanimously negative. And I don't think I remember a single person in my friend circle becoming a fan because of that era. They may have picked up a lot of radio listening fans, but man oh man I don't think I can ever remember another band sabotaging their popularity in this scene practically overnight quite like Atreyu did.

I didn't mind them going in a more radio-friendly direction, they showed hints of that on Death Grip. Lead Sails was just a terrible record. Songs were boring, lyrics were even worse and the record getting the Feldmann Treatment didn't help either.

I can't even ironically get behind this. Dear lord. When did djent jump the shark?

That band got so much shit for so long and I never understood why. They were like THE band to hate within the metal community. So I agree, it's cool to see the love here.

Just like any other genre, you're gonna have some bad bands. Don't judge the genre as a whole.

haha I'm loving the Hacktivist love/hate.

here's another few djent cuts I enjoy:

Dude is a one man band and although not technically djent, it's still a cool project.

You like dubstep with your djent? Here you go:

    Always thought that was fun.

The drummer for Intervals has his own solo project too which rips:

And this last one isn't djent, but it's one of my favs from 2016 so far:

Cloud kicker should be universally loved. They remind me alot of scale the summit.

Anup is right up there with Misha mansoor for not only writing great tunes but pushing the production aspect of djent. Nice to see some fellow brown guys in metal too :)

We're more than half through the year, wanna do midyear lists? The chthelist post reminded me that this has been a pretty good year for metal.

Other than nails being my by far number 1, my top five includes obscura, graves at sea, rotten sound, and vektor. I haven't listened to the new revocation yet but I'm sure I'll love it.

  24. Anyone who hasn't should give Cloudkicker's The Discovery and Beacons a listen. Two incredible albums.
