Oh, yeah, duh. I forgot about that. Then as a person who knew about the situation before she should probably educate herself on the specifics of the matter. Hopefully people reach out to her on social media if she continues to link up with them/promote them.

 

Last year when their comeback was going down, the specific survivor involved in the one allegation of misconduct that we know about (there are more than one!) gave some people permission to share the truth on social media. Directing them to those people's tweets would probably be the best thing to do, imo, considering they were expressly authorized to speak on her behalf.

 

I posted something similar back when Mark Hoppus tweeted (and then deleted) about Pinegrove.

These artists have a very large platform (Hoppus, JEW, Phoebe) and their names carry a lot of weight. I would like to think that they wouldn't just blindly support a song or an artist without knowing much about them. Them 'promoting' a song or a band is a fairly large co-sign in my opinion. Not saying they know the history, but to me, it's kind of irresponsible to promote something if they aren't fully educated given their platform.

I realize that isn't a realistic belief on my part, I just wish there would be a little less 'blind promotion' from these artists who have large followings.

I know when my favorite bands mention other bands, I typically do go check them out.

 

I was scrolling the replies of that tweet for a while and not a single person said anything negative about pinegrove. It sucks that this knowledge doesn’t really extend outside of this forum.

 

I think it’s interesting how much everyone says this forum is the only way to know really. Maybe that’s true but I just feel like....I doubt it? Like, sure the average fan probably wouldn’t know......but we’re talking about people IN the music scene? They know vastly more people and have access to more insider information than we do on this website. I find it hard to imagine that they haven’t heard rumblings or rumors or what have you (how many times did a predator get exposed and artists in the scene were like yep this was an open secret???)
It’s just wild, to me, to give the benefit of the doubt so readily.
At the end of the day I’m not judging anyone or anything because we really can’t ever know the level of their knowledge but yeah I just had to throw that out there bc clearly I’m in the minority with thinking that but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Phoebe yes, 1975 maybe, but JEW probably not. JEW is in an entirely different level of the music scene and has been for nearly 20 years.

This runs through my head every time I see it mentioned that other artists probably don’t have any idea about stuff. I barely have a social media presence and don’t work anywhere near the industry, and I am aware of who’s an abuser and the people who are associated with them. I guess anything is possible in regards to what people know/don’t know, but Im just like they literally live in that world. It’s frustrating on multiple levels

Regardless of whether or not Matty knows the full Pinegrove story, and whether or not he was being facetious, a white person, who in the last 12 months had to apologize for his shitty, sexist, vapid, racist take about hip hop, probably shouldn’t be making toungue-in-cheek jokes about white privilege

Also, I’ll just say this and then dip. What Phoebe Bridgers knows about Pinegrove is wholly irrelevant. If she wants to listen to Pinegrove on her own time, that is 100% her prerogative. It’s her choice to make, like it’s everyone’s choice to make. Please avoid going after a woman, whose survival of Ryan Adams’ sexual misconduct was literally a huge story in the New York Times this year, because of a bad tweet from a stupid man.

 

It is still her responsibility to not use her large public platform to promote an abuser, regardless of her status as a survivor of abuse. She RT'd the tweet before it was deleted.

 

Of course she's allowed to listen to whatever she wants on her own time, as anyone is, but sharing it around and promoting their music is a different story entirely. Like I said before, I don't know what she knows, but sharing/promoting is not the same thing as privately listening to the music.

 

She was supposed to be touring Europe with them right when the story broke (not that I care about her or Pinegrove, but yeah, they are close).

 

She retweeted the tweet. Seems like she's supporting the band.

Didn’t realize she retweeted it, and that does change my perspective somewhat.

 

How so ? How is it different from, say, all these pop-punk dudes supporting JJR, or the guy from the 1975 posting stories about Brand New and Pinegrove ?

 

Not sure its allowing them to be in a bubble so much as acknowledging the reality of the level of their success. Wouldnt expect anyone on their level to be digging into bands like Pinegrove.
