After reading about his recent opinions on cancel culture, it makes me wonder if he knows and just doesn't care.

Yeah now that I think about it, even this post of mine kinda approaches the topic in more monolithic terms and not really touching on the individual reactions that people are having to the news.

  7. The full quote and context makes a lot more sense. He was talking about his last interview with Fader, where he was "canceled" for his shitty statement about misogyny and rap music, and apologized and clarified on Twitter, and faced a lot of online backlash. He's not talking about abusers.

I just think, rather than coming in with wild sweeping accusations about a group of people trying to call out shitty abusers, the better response would’ve been to be like “Hey, it sucks that Matty did that”

There are absolutely bands on this site that have done horrible shit that doesn’t get talked about enough (fuck The Wonder Years forever), but calling out this thread as a whole instead of talking to specific people about hypocritical behavior is a bad look. I get frustrated too, this just didn’t seem like the best way to go about it.

Yet "cancel culture" is a pejorative term frequently used to shield abusers from being accountable that can't be taken out of context either. It's hard for me to see how its disconnected from how he might view bands that have abused their platforms. Especially since people have made excuses for Pinegrove for not being as bad in comparison to other allegations. This connects directly to his comments about the level of indiscretions.

  12. If those are the lines you wanna draw, be my guest. Given the mass publicity the band got yesterday, I think it’s far more likely he just listened to the song and it’s completely unrelated to the previous quote.

Cancel culture definitely has plenty of issues that need ro be addressed. Like any sub-culture/counter-culture its subject to human nature. So much of it has become performative and self-serving. I think our community does a pretty good job(for the mosy part) of focusing on what's important but the internet at large definitely uses it as another exscuse to put people in the "in group" or "out group", to gain clout, or to play gotcha. Should some people be cancelled and deplatformed? Yeah, but that doesnt mean the culture itself is immune to criticism.

I'm sure somebody more online than me can recommend some writing on the subject from a cultural anthropological perspective.

  14. I think a lot of this also has to do with the feeling of futility involved in just paying attention to things like this and speaking out against them. Because speaking out is all you can really do, none of us can arrest anybody or cancel their record deal or take them off shelves. And it's like, yeah you should speak out when something shitty is going on, but its virtually impossible, not to mention a great way to make your life miserable, to speak out about everything. But when speaking out is the only thing to be done, anytime someone makes a reasonable judgement call on their own to either be like, this doesn't meet the criteria for me to spend so much emotional energy yelling and arguing about or I don't think this is that bad on the grand scale or whatever, it can seem like tacit approval when really it's just like, christ, I need to be doing something else sometimes.

I think it's understandable people are upset that a popular artist is promoting sucky artists, and the fact that the popular artist might not know they're sucky is also disappointing. And I'm not even putting that on Matty. I think it's disheartening because these abusers don't get called out on the level they should. Matty should know Jesse Lacey sucks because it should be common knowledge, but it isn't. It not being common knowledge is what bothers me. Being in the little niche of Chorus I like to think these things are widely known and it's disappointing that popular men in the music community don't know or might not know. Idk if this makes sense. Not trying to attack Matty for not knowing (if we're to assume he doesn't) but more disappointed in the overall culture that allows stories of abusers to go underreported or swept under the rug.

If Matty does know then he sucks for promoting harmful abusers to his impressionable fans. If he doesn't know then it sucks that abusers are constantly able to fly under the radar and their abuse is only known in niche communities. Idk.

Yeah it feels like every woman in the industry probably shares a list of shitty men and a bunch of men just have no idea and it sucks because no one should have to be the person who tells everyone about who's an abuser it's traumatic

While I do think the Jesse Lacey incident(s) was reported by some bigger outlets than some others in the scene, it’s still not like, ‘household information.’ I would expect that most in the music industry would have an idea though. But it’s also entirely possible they don’t. It’s barely a mention on the band’s extensive Wikipedia page - where most people may look if they’re trying to get some quick info on the band.

Like many others have said in here, I know zero people in real life who are aware of the situation. If we don’t want people promoting their music or their brand, it’s on us to try and educate people who are if we come across it.

I’ve definitely @‘ed people on social media if they were blindly promoting a troubling musician, entertainer or athlete just to do ‘my part’ but as many of these conversations come back to, there’s an entire world outside of this site that isn’t as plugged in or glued to the news about these situations as we are. Of course that’s not ideal, but unfortunately that’s just the way it is.
