I definitely want to cede the floor to @supernovagirl on this topic wherever possible and to whatever capacity she has the energy for it because at the end of the day, I am not skinny but I am not a size where I experience the type of fatphobia that is normalized in our culture.

My experience with weight gain and weight loss has been an extremely long journey that began with an eating disorder in high school, gaining a lot of weight in my early 20s due to depression and hormonal birth control, and losing 30 lbs in the past year partially due to better habits but more because of gastrointestinal health issues. I have been feeling alienated in my body for the better part of a decade because first I was trying to live up to an impossible societal standard, then I learned to accept the body that adulthood had given me, and then it was taken away from me just as I was learning to accept it.

I used to have the same mentality that I shouldn’t be shamed for talking about wanting to lose weight, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized the things I really wanted to change were habits and mindsets, and anything that happened as a result was a side effect. On top of that, it was distressing to hear how great I looked or how hard I must be working when I literally couldn’t eat a meal without immediately getting sick in some way. I overcame an eating disorder and learned to love food and eating only to have it all betray me again.

All of this is anecdotal and just my experience, and these kinds of things pale in comparison to the amount of casual, misinformed fatphobia I see others having to deal with. Which is why I think it is just not something we should not comment on because there are so many ways in which these comments could hurt people. There are so many interesting things to compliment people on - I would rather be complimented on my ability to do yoga, or how my hair looks cool.

People are free to think that Adele looks better one way or the other but honestly? All bias aside how fucking boring to tell a woman that the interesting thing about her is how much she can shrink herself.

All of the above @personalmaps thank you & thanks for sharing.
you’re right. Commenting on someone’s weight loss is at the end of the day a comment on an aesthetic change, one that might not have been by choice or achieved by healthy means. So why comment on that? If you must comment on someone’s aesthetic choice you can pick their hair, clothing, makeup, etc. things that are proven to be much more within our control than weight.

the reality is that at least in the United States disordered eating, actual eating disorders, and self esteem issues themselves are outrageously high. Being more mindful about our language can do wonders in effecting these things.

I don't think there's an issue with playing in particular countries especially considering she's most definitely toured in US states that either have concentration camps, or unceded native american land, for example.

  13. I don't even use Instagram so I only see these things when they're posted elsewhere. Don't understand why anyone would willingly still listen to that band in 2019.

With the MCR reunion in the news - did we get anything further on the allegations and Instagram account re: James Dewees? I know there was talk of a Pitchfork article coming out at some point but I don't see that as having materialized.

Curious if he'll be involved in this reunion or not.

Haha wait, so you're all gonna gloss over the beloved Matt Healy publicly supporting both Brand New and Pinegrove and give him the benefit of the doubt that "he just doesn't know better."

    Unreal.

I don't see anyone saying a damn thing. No "what a scumbag" or any of the other choice words usually used for those who do that stuff. Just quietly passing it by and moving on to other topics.

do people regularly refer to others who post pinegrove songs in their instagram stories as "scumbags"
