Of the many problems it has, one is that there is no conviction to it. “Jesus Walks” felt like it came from a place of hurt and frustration, but ultimately was about praise and how Jesus is for everyone.

This has him just doing blanket praise and complaining about the IRS like he’s a Righteous Gemstone. It reminded me of my friend who thought becoming a Christian meant buying a giant cross necklace to show off how much he believes in Jesus.

Kanye saying that line about charging more than he should is so bad especially because I swear a few years ago he said something about wanting to make all his clothing more cheaper and available to everywhere one

He was 100% acting like he was about to come out with the Kanye version of Starbury’s.

Also him saying how he can’t let his family starve while he’s selling $200 sneakers on the low end and married to an extremely wealthy person is insane.

‘God Is’ is a good song. I don’t hate this but i probably won’t be listening through it a week from now.

Yeah, and there's even more now as of this post. More piano during the hallelujah part of Selah, more instrumentation and choir in Water, possible Young Thug (according to Reddit but I'm not sure I believe it) backing vocals at the end of Hands On

I've heard this three times now

    Good songs:
    Selah
    Follow God
    On God
    Everything We Need
    Use This Gospel

    Okay songs:
    Water
    God Is
    Hands On

    Bad songs:
    Closed on Sunday

I don't listen to this kind of music so can't judge:
    Every Hour

Could be really good if it was longer:
    Jesus is Lord

Basically, if I don't focus on the lyrics too much I definitely enjoy listening to this

I dunno, I did some digging and it seems like nothing actually changed, placebo effect. People have downloaded the "old" and "new" versions and there is no change, haha

People seem pretty split, I'm genuinely unsure now lol. I know for a fact the mixing is better now than when it dropped though

the original person that started the rumor that the album got better mixing came out and said they were trolling. It’s still the same album.

The story about Kanye calling Joel Osteen and Jerry Falwell is very telling when you look to where all this Christianity came from.

In the Zane Lowe interview he references that he now has full time preacher so he can start a church. This is clearly Kanye trying to get tax exempt status for Yeezy, he sees the dollars in televangelism. Also, when Zane called him on his Trump bullshit, Kanye tried to switch the topic immediately, this guy is a fucking fraud.

Less than a year ago this guy was saying slavery was a choice and Bill Cosby is innocent, why is our culture giving this guy so many chances?!

I don’t think he’s faking at all, which is not say he won’t abandon it within a year though

Thinking of this album put me in the mood for some Gospel by Kanye so I started listening to the College Dropout, which led me to check out what J. Ivy has been up to. He has two albums on Spotify, one from 2010 and one from 2017, and both have some interesting stuff on them.

Completely agree. He believes he believes but there's no substance behind it. For some reason he has decided that this is what Kanye West is but there's been zero deep thought put into it.

I agree. Which is an especially odd realization if you’re listening to the first few albums. It feels a little like he was already there but ended up getting lost. Which is pretty accurate I guess.

Finally got around to giving this a couple listens, & man, it's... weird.

Like. The tracks don't even flow right, even just from the first track into the second, in spite of going through so many iterations. And, there's such a weird lack of effort to, like, what, 60% of the time he opens his mouth on here? It's like this bizarre snapshot of someone who's trying to figure out what being a Christian looks like, the same way an alien looking a pop culture would. It's all very sincere, but also an even deeper level of his ongoing trend of spewing unformed thoughts.

So, I guess I think he's both trying very hard & not trying at all, all at once, in a way?

If he's not going to give up on this Christian whim of his (which, personally, I don't want him to, though it'd be great if someone could step in & divorce his understanding of religion from conservative white evangelicalism; I know some black women who'd have a lot of truth to speak into his toxic worldview/mentality)...

I can't make up my mind on what I want him to do next. Part of me would be pretty intrigued by him going in more of a Kirk Franklin type direction, but still w/ his own production style (but... maybe a little more formed next time, lol). Another part of me would be interested in him having some collaborations w/ people like Lecrae, who actually know how to be both Christians & rappers. And, ANOTHER part of me would kill to hear just one collaboration w/ TobyMac, or heck, maybe even all of dc Talk!? Why not.

I was gonna say, for someone who has spent his career setting trends, he's entirely at the mercy of his whims. He's been directionless for a long while.
