Opening of “555” is so similar to the very beginning of “Welcome to New York” ??? Lol

Wonder why they held off 5 tracks?
When people like myself were saying 10 songs seemed short, that’s why. They left off 1/3 of what they recorded. Maybe they will do an EP or something if we are lucky.

The 10 that made Surviving are good though.

They actually held off 6. They had 15 before 555 was a thing.

I feel like very few albums truly merit being 15 or 16 songs long. Also, bands record more songs than they use all the time. That's why b-sides are a thing. We will hear these songs at some point, I'm sure.

Artists being good self-editors is a good thing. A really tight, concise album almost always ages better than a bloated, overlong one.

I still say I could easily handle more than 10
Jimmy songs without it feeling bloated. I get not doing 15 songs and having a few bsides, but Surviving could have been 12 songs an I don’t think a person here would say it’s too long. Helps they have a nice variety of song styles on their albums.

Plus I’ll put all 15 (if they ever get released) on a playlist and listen and love it.

I think it's pretty perfect as is. I'm hesitant to say I want more songs when I don't know what those songs sound like. Maybe they got cut for good reasons. The JEW albums from this decade that I don't think have any weak points are the 10-track albums, so I think this length is pretty great for them.

i would not be surprised if they intentionally held off 5 songs to package them as their own EP. would be the smartest move both artistically and from a business standpoint. a lean 10 track album and a 4-5 track EP the following year is always ace.

If they do that I’d be happy. Thrice Palms felt short at 10, but adding 4 tracks with Deeper Wells was perfect.

    IB was 11
    Damage was 10
    Invented 12

...so Surviving at 10 is in the same ballpark for closest releases. I think Damage has some weak points (To Me...not to you maybe) and I listen to it the least of any of any album by Jimmy (except pre Clarity).

I've given the album a handful of listens now all the way through. On my first few listens, the first two songs didn't really grab me much at all, which I found extremely surprising given everything that I had heard and read about the album and these songs so far. Neither of them were bad by any means. They were both really good, solid songs, but I wouldn't call either of them great at that point. The third song struck me immediately as something really special though and that was the point at which the album kicked into high gear for me and it never let up after that. I fell in love with "555" immediately on my first actual full listen to it.

I have warmed up some on the first two tracks after listening to the album a few more times. Where I thought they were merely good at first, I would say they are pretty great now. There is not a weak song on this album to me.

The album absolutely does feel short to me however at 10 tracks / 36 minutes. It definitely could have handled a couple more 3-odd-minutes bangers, or one more really solid, epic song around the 5-minute mark. Or perhaps a few of the 10 tracks they went with could have been fleshed out a little bit more. I know it is still very early, and I wouldn't go so far as to say the album feels incomplete at this point, but my biggest critique would be that it definitely does feel noticeably short.

I don't think it is so much the number of tracks to me, as 10 is good number for an album, but the 36 minutes does end up feeling short to me for whatever reason. The 9 pretty short songs and one epic closer feels short. I suppose it could be that I just expect longer more epic songs from them. It honestly could just be that I know they have a history of keeping some ABSOLUTE GEMS off of albums as b-sides and I am being greedy.

One listen in and yeah is album is stellar, not that I had any doubt it would be

Also whoever said "Surviving" isn't a real song officially has the worst music take of 2019, everything about that song is a hook
