You know how when you're driving, and you hear an unfamiliar sound, and you freak the fuck out because you think it's either something wrong with your car, or it's a cop? Might be just me. Anyways, I freaked the fuck out this morning when I heard the xylophones for the first time. Took me a second to realize it was part of the song.

I'd have to disagree a little bit. Luca is melodically the same just missing the bridge. Batallions has a ton of similarities but uses a different verse melody and feel. Also the chorus isn't the same all he way through.

Luca also shares way more lyrics wth the demo than archers and batallions.

Batallions was base for arched for sure but to say they sound just as close to each other is probably wrong

Very much disagree with you on that. The basic structure for "Luca" is the same on both versions, the major change comes with the breakdown at the end. Overall, the chorus is the same, the 2nd verse is basically the same, and the instrumentals are mostly the same. The only real similarity between "Battalions" and "Archers" is part of the vocal melody for the chorus. There's a few other minor similarities, but it's really just one slightly borrowed part.

    Fine. >-p

Archers is almost as close to Battalions as the album version of Luca is to the demo.

Still, it's more of a stretch to say that you shouldn't consider Archers to be the finished version of Battalions then it is to say they're just as close as the 2 versions of Luca.

The lyrics are quite different imo. The melody might be the same but because the lyrics differ i never thought about them as the same song.

Melody is only the same in the chorus too. I understand where both camps come from but you can argue archers is the finished product of batallions for sure

The musical discussion of the similarities between Battalions and Archers has already been had here, I'm not going to repeat that but there are a lot more similarities than just "part of the vocal melody for the chorus".

I would also disagree that the major change comes with the breakdown at the end. When the full band arrangement of Luca changes the feel of the song in a way that's not all that dissimilar from how the instrumental changes in Archers change the feel of Battalions.

I'll admit I was being hyperbolic in my initial response, but it's totally acceptable to (and I would argue that everyone definitely should) consider Archers the final version of Battalions. I'm pretty sure the band has even acknowledged that this is true.

I take almost the opposite approach. The lyrics in the demos from so many bands differ from the final versions, I hardly even take them into account in that regard.

Too each their own. I get where you're coming from, but too me they exist on completely different planes, whereas I can see a clear progression on how the "Luca" demo became the DAG version. Although, if it's true that the band themselves said "Archers" is the final version then I guess it's true.

That bridge is my favorite moment in BN's catalogue. I love the melody, the delivery, and the bizarre lyrics. I wish I could play piano and/or sing.
