That’s fine, I know it’s something people feel super strongly about. I just hope people are willing to take a step back and view it through a more critical lens instead of as something beyond reproach only to be taken at face value. The MUCH more important thing is to take that lens moving forward and not support him, which I think everyone is totally in agreement about even if they love the show.

Now someone post a truly heinous take about sitcoms or something so we can get back to the true serious issues plaguing our time.

Uuuuuugh I want to be done, but his super well known capacity as a tyrant and control freak over every aspect of the show can’t be left out of the discussion either. If it was any other aspect of the show and someone claimed he had no say in how it was handled, that would be laughable. The fact that it was his baby and he was obsessive over every detail is a huge part of the show, for better or for worse.

EDIT: And at the risk of derailing it even further, the fact that there were lots of women involved in the show when we specifically know at least one of those was intentionally targeted by him and then later fired doesn’t make me feel any better about the circumstances. Those women deserve every credit imaginable, but their presence can’t be used to absolve the show.

I know how terrible and controlling he was. As much as he was all that, though, I’m not going to minimize the contributions of the other people who worked on the show. I think it’s possible to be aware of Weiner, his behaviors, and how it affected the show, and have it mind when viewing/discussing the show, and still read the text of the show and see the ways in which it transcended it’s showrunner/creator.

Yeah, that just gets into an area is separation that I personally don’t think is completely fair. And probably wouldn’t be happening if it was another work being discussed that held lesser value to people. I’m also not saying it is entirely without merit or an abject failure of course, but I do think saying as a blanket that it isn’t misogynistic or objectifying and that his views on women don’t shape it from the core is an issue. Watching a woman crawl around on all fours is hard enough even as a critical piece.

Impossible, the show was already terrible when I stopped watching in like 2011.

TWD had two good episodes: The pilot and "Clear."

The one where they find Morgan and he's gone insane.

Oops yeah I stopped way before then. But I’m willing to trust that you’re right. The pilot definitely gave an infinite amount of undeserved good will.

IIRC, the pilot and "Clear" can almost act as standalone episodes.

But year, my old roommates were wild about TWD. I would watch with them for like four years and never got why anyone thought it was good, besides the iconography.

Because it might entice someone from the bad place to voice a negative opinion about the show.

It’s a good show and worth watching but the quality has gone downhill, imo. First two seasons were amazing and the third ended up being repetitive. And the new one is just okay so far.

To be honest, I never found it ‘laugh out loud’ funny. Chuckleworthy I guess
