They own the IP but Microsoft has exclusive publishing rights to the original game. So a sequel can be on PS5 but the original can’t be ported to PlayStation.

That’s interesting. Sony owns them now, right? In that case I think a SO2 might very well in the cards, unless Sony is being petty, which does happen lol

Yeah Sony owns them now so any sequel would be a PlayStation exclusive. I think literally the only thing standing in the way of a sequel is Spider-Man’s success tbh, it’s clear that Insomniac still loves the IP and wants to do more with it. They made sure they retained the rights for a reason.

Also, as good as all of Microsoft’s acquisitions have been, Sony locking down Insomniac was the biggest get of them all imo. Such a great studio.

me, hyped at the idea of SO2: :)

me, learning if it ever comes out it’ll be exclusive to a console I’ll never own: :(

I guess. From a mainstream AAA game angle yeah, but personally I’d mostly rather play games by Obsidian and Double Fine. Microsoft is definitely making very interesting acquisitions. These two platform holders are definitely moving into different directions more and more, which is good.

I'd be inclined to agree, the only reservation is if Playground turns out to be a heavy hitting 2 team studio

Honestly from a personal standpoint I think Obsidian is equally as good of a get but I guess I mean more from like the standpoint of which studio is going to sell more consoles and make more money for the publisher. Probably should've made that distinction in my original post lol

That’s likely true. I think Obsidian and Double Fine however can make Microsoft a lot of money, if indirectly. They could be sort of loss leaders.

Sony has more heavy hitters and Microsoft hopes to get a plethora of smaller scaled games for gamepass (no idea how long until we see what The Initiative is working on)

Hey I've said this in here before but I was fine totally skipping out on Xbox in the next gen until they announced those acquisitions. Now I'm gonna get one.

Obsidian is easily the most interesting studio to me that Microsoft have acquired recently

Yeah. Sony is focusing on prestige games, Microsoft’s is focusing on multiplayer, games as a service and apparently now niche-y games by a certain kind of beloved developers.

honestly what games did these developers make that you guys are that into?

with Obsidian, New Vegas and Kotor 2 were handed to them

Double Fine was a developer decades ago, time has passed them by

I'm way more likely to get an Xbox One 2 at some point than I ever was with the Xbox One. Good exclusives is what gets me interested in your console

I'm a gamepass shill, did the $2 for 3 years deal so that has me locked into their ecosystem for a while

I loved Stick of Truth but it's not like they were writing the majority of that game

    Spiderman really isn't very Ubisoft-y

Obsidian puts out good games all the time

Double Fine as a studio mostly makes very unique games whenever they do make one and now they actually have the money

Obsidian developed New Vegas in like 18 months, with Bethesda breathing down their necks the whole time, and it still turned out as the best modern Fallout game lol. But they've made lots of other good games like Pillars of Eternity, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Dungeon Siege 3, etc.

Insomniac has Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive, plus Spider-Man was wayyyy better than Ubisoft open world games. It had an incredible story too and performances.

Double Fine has put out a lot of really cool small-sized games over the last several years, but mainly the reason why this is exciting is because now they'll have Microsoft money backing them and a platform holder with a vested interest in their success. Really excited to see what they can come up with in that position.
