I mean that's actually kind of my take, like if Daryl was prepared for the backlash then fine good for him but if he tweeted that without thinking then he's legitimately a fucking moron lol

 

The NBA's initial response was posted in English and in Mandarin on the Chinese version of Twitter (Weibo). Independent translations for the latter show that the statement called Morey's tweets "inappropriate" and referenced "hurt feelings," which is (apparently) a common trope used in Chinese government propaganda. These references are nowhere to be found in the English version. In essence, they cowed to the Chinese government in the Mandarin version.

Subsequently, the league has responded to backlash from America and paid much more lip service to the idea of defending free speech (i.e. a defense of Morey), but they have not yet adequately explained what the hell that Weibo statement was.

As for the Chinese government response, I think this thread pretty accurately sums it up:

Like, Morey needs to know better than to just tweet that. The Rockets being the most popular team in the country, so much so that they have made branding changes and additions to appeal to Chinese consumers, you should be familiar with the country you do business with. It’s cool that he wanted to take a stand, but he could’ve taken that stand without trying to do business with China in the first place. If he were gonna stick to his guns and be willing to lose his job over it, then it’d be different. Idk, it feels backwards to be telling him to not say anything, I get that. But there’s levels to it
