the only one I could think of was Manchester by the Sea but I have no idea what qualifies as a blockbuster

so going by this logic, people in the year 2505 will have to take into account all films made prior before putting together a thorough review? Steep slope.

Yes. Art informs all the art that comes after it. Optimistic of you to assume films will still be being made in 2505 though.

Pretty sure that same explanation has been given towards Cameron Monaghan's character in the show Gotham, too

The only reason Todd is saying that is because he doesn’t want people to keep asking him if this Joker will be in a Batman film. With this film making $95 mil OW, I won’t be surprised if WB tries to find a way to change Todd’s mind.

there is no way that Arthur Fleck being the Joker makes sense canonically in any other incarnation of Batman, Joker is not like 25-30 years older than Batman I don't think and he'd be like 70 now

The Robert Pattinson Batman takes place in the 90s. This film was in the 80s and Arthur was only supposed to be mid 30s. It could work if they both parties agreed to allow it. A 45 year old Joker against an early 20s Batman would work.

Pattinson playing against Phoneix would be really good

I like that literally the only compelling thing about this film's existence for me is how it could encourage studios to find more standalone, small budget ways to utilize iconic intellectual properties. And yet, even w/ all the apparently unearned "serious cinema" posturing, people are still stuck on trying to tie it to other Batman films.

If the director didn’t shoehorn in the death of Bruce’s parents I don’t think many people would be trying to discover a way for Batman to meet this Joker.

That might have been the studio more than the director thought, unless already otherwise stated.

That someone thinks we need another rendition of the Waynes being murdered is amazing. Even the “Spider-Man” folks figured out we don’t need to see Uncle Ben die a third time.

Whoever it is was, it has given a lot of people an expectation that the studio or director eventually plans for the two to meet. An expectation that otherwise wouldn’t feel plausible or necessary.

Yeah I'm not defending the choice, I don't think this movie needed the Waynes in any capacity. Though the fanboy in me loved seeing the scene with Arthur, Bruce, and Alfred. Thomas could have been any other Gotham family name and it would have been fine IMO.

  23. While it's quite pretentious and far from perfect, can't deny I was stunned by this. I have a minor gripe with how they went down a laundry list of ways to break Arthur.

You'd think with how elegant the cinematography was, his descent would've been just as nuanced. Instead, they glanced over all the reasons you'd expect (failed career, bullied) and then some (neurological condition, broken home, poverty, etc).

I think it was overstuffed in that sense on purpose and while it was effective plot-wise, it takes away from the film's evident sense of grandiosity or profoundness.

All they needed to do was have the movie sign show Mask of Zorro for the riots and I'm sure the message would have gotten across.
