Really liked this film, definitely felt more Taxi Driver than KoC but Deniro/the show was pretty on the nose.

Have not seen the King of Comedy yet, so I appreciate this context. That said, how do you interpret the bloody footsteps left behind JOKER as he walks in the last scene? If we go with the interpretation that the majority of movie only took place in JOKER's head, then we have to assume he killed the social worker interviewing him in the last scene and that maybe that is his first kill or something like that?

Is there another origin story movie for a super villain that is like this movie out there somewhere?

  5. did people think the actual content of the movie justified the fear over incel shooters? or the presence of cops in theaters?

Good guy, but a bad dude

It’s really grim and morbid but there’s no way I think the reactions were justified. I don’t think any part of the movie portrays him as cool or likable.

I thought that was seriously blown out of proportion. The plot with Zazie had big incel vibes but much like the rest of the movie it wasn’t emphasized or developed for better or worse. Nothing felt like a rallying cry or an encouragement.

It’s damned if do or don’t. People are anxious at movies and concerts, it’s a point reiterated in many threads on this site. This is one of the few dark, gritty, “realistic” blockbusters being released this year that seems to mirror the backgrounds of some of these mass shooters.

I don’t think it’s wrong to be cautious about that and the fact that there’s been no violence at screenings doesn’t mean the media messed up. I’ve seen one of the Chapo guys dunking on the media for it being overblown and it’s just like, good lord, would you have been satisfied if a shooting did occur?

No. This movie is toothless. It has no ideology to be inspired by in any direction. People march with signs that say “resist” and “kill the rich”, inspired by the Joker, but he doesn’t care. He says he isn’t political. But it’s not even about a dangerous populist capitalizing on a movement he didn’t intend to start; its about a victimized poor man with mental health issues who wants people to like his stand up.

Taxi Driver and the King of Comedy aren’t about super villains but they did this all before and with actual substance.

The “kill the rich” signs piqued my interest too but the second you try to follow any political thread in this movie you end up at a dead end. It’s just dumb

The only movie that should be toothless is How To Train Your Dragon

  17. I don't really think putting police with guns in the movie theater is a good way to calm fears about shootings, or qualifies as "caution". That would scare me a lot more than a nebulous possibility of a shooting. Neither, by the way, does it qualify as caution to - based on the answers to my question - misrepresent the content of the movie to act like it's advocating something it's not, and use that to make people scared for their lives.

I don't think "victimized poor man with mental health issues" is a good way to think of the "background" of mass shooters and I definitely don't think it's a good idea to attach that connotation to any media dealing with those themes or themes of alienation and abuse and abandonment etc. Given how many shooters are white nationalists they probably have more in common with your average cop than the subject of this movie. Those are the same cops who, because of this discourse directly, were in theaters last night with guns. So, I don't really see how any of this was cautious in any way, and I don't see how acknowledging that means that one would be satisfied if a shooting did happen. I really don't see how this discourse did anything but make it more likely. I don't get any of this!

when I first started working at a movie theater many years ago, I got a call that a gentleman kept on using his cell phone in an auditorium. I went over to him and politely asked him to stop using his phone and he grabbed my arm and aggressively pulled me down to his level and said that he was an off duty cop and, “if you bother me again, I’ll fuck you up.” It doesn’t matter where they are
