There's a lot of good examples, but I don't think that Taika Waititi is one of them. Disney was concerned about him putting out that movie, just proving Philips point.

What's funny is, outside of the f slur in the first Hangover, it wasn't like most of the comedy relied on stuff that's super problematic. Phil was obviously misogynistic and the most problematic character in the movie but most of the comedy was slapstick stuff or Alan just being a sociopathic dummy.

I guess most of the "omg she's a prostitute!" stuff was pretty problematic too. But even with the scenes involving her, it was more funny that Stu's wife was going to flip out, or Alan didn't understand the concept of the holocaust ring, etc.

Disney was worried about an anti-Nazi movie upsetting the alt-right, whereas Philips is just angrily railing against the "SJW Left". Not exactly the same scenario.

Philips is an idiot, but for a second just take out the SJW part. His concern is that you can't make comedies anymore without offending someone. Disney had the same fear with Waititi and Jojo.

But you can't divorce the comments from the context, the context is the whole point. Philips wants to be able to continue making lazy fratbro comedies and punching down toward marginalized groups and is mad that he feels as though he can't do so anymore. Disney was afraid of backlash to an anti-Nazi film from actual Nazis. Totally different.

Philips isn't talking about the second scenario when he says he feels like he can't make comedies anymore. I think even he would agree that it's good to make fun of Nazis.

Is that true though? I thought Disney’s anxiety around Jojo was less about backlash from white supremacists and more that people wouldn’t understand the premise and assume that it was pro-white supremacy.

NYC is putting undercover officers in screenings of this to diffuse potential terror acts. Yikes. That's even worse.

This is just insane. God I hope nothing actually happens over this release.

I honestly kind of feel like they’re almost inviting something to happen with all this extra scrutiny... have there actually been any legitimate threats reported?

I’m not sure why it’s hard to buy. It seems much more believable to me that a giant corporation focused on the bottom line would be more concerned about their movie being perceived as pro-Nazi vs. getting backlash from far-right fringe groups. The former would hurt both sales and reputation much more than the latter.

Not going to derail this thread further after this but I don't buy that Disney would ever believe that anyone would make the mistake of thinking the movie was pro-Nazi, it's an absurd thing to even suggest. Much more believable that they'd be worried of alienating alt-right or conservative Disney fans with victim complexes who think every attack on Nazis is actually a veiled attack on conservatives in 2019. But they can't say that.

That’s ridiculous. You can see it right in their marketing, they are practically tripping over themselves to make it explicit that it’s “anti-hate”, a “satire”, etc etc. It’s blatantly obvious they are much more focused on making sure people don’t misinterpret it as some kind of sympathetic Nazi portrayal.

I mean, lots of people tune commercials out when watching TV, so I could see how someone half-paying attention could look up from their phone for a second, see Hitler being silly with a kid, and not realize what it's about right away. The concern seems rational.

I’m glad that picture of the hangover trilogy says the films that are on it. I almost thought Hangover IV: Making SJWs mad online was on there too

I wouldn't take Disney's reluctance to release something as anything other than them being a company that doesn't take any risks and were mad that they were saddled with this. Hell, they didn't want an Edgar Wright "Ant-Man" or Lord/Miller "Star Wars" film when they were shown to be something different from the boilerplate feel of those franchises.

  25. This was...an experience and not one that I enjoyed.

I’ve never been patted down before seeing a movie before so that was a surprise.

    Phoenix is outstanding.

    It drags a lot.
I didn’t read reviews beforehand really so a lot of this caught me off guard.
