When I was in NC for the Anberlin show, a friend told me that a guy I used to hang out with a lot before I moved home shot and killed himself. I had deleted him off of FB because he had been posting crazy shit about Trump, I couldn't take it anymore.

His wife (who I never met and isn't friends with me on FB) just like a pic we were tagged together in. I just looked at his FB and it's all his wife and mother posting how much they miss him...damn that's heavy.

 

A lady who sells magic mushrooms.

 

He had kids and a wife. Shit. Makes me think twice about arguing with people online honestly. He had always been troubled in some ways but was a good guy deep down. Makes me feel horrible that I let politics come between us.

 

I think the alt right preys on vulnerable people , but you didn't do anything wrong and it's hard to tell when someone is just shitty

 

All you did was cut him out, your mental health counts too.

 

You're both definitely right, it's just sad to think that part of his aggression and anger was almost definitely the outward manifestation of his mental illness and, not that I feel like it was my personal responsibility to do something about it, but that instead of even trying to reach out, the politics becomes so personal you lose the person in it sometimes. Like I'm really trying to make my relationship with my mom better, even though her politics are awful, because I can't live like this anymore, where I see people in such black and white terms. I'm not saying that some people aren't genuinely awful or always deserve empathy, especially alt-right people or people with ideas that actively harm others, but that in my day to day life there are people that can maybe be reached and I want to do better at seeing them in a more humane, less hateful way.
