He's right : Marner would play for free, Matthews would play for free, I would play for free. Spot the difference - people will play for free if no one is willing to pay them.

Hockey is a ton of fun to play, which is why I play for free in my league. The difference is, NHL-ers are a thousand times better than me. I get paid in a beer or two after the game. I don't need an agent to tell me that's the best I'm going to be offered.
