Home and Seasons are the two that are still the most listenable. Anything from Next on is a hard pass imo

I hate threads like these, but here's mine:

Poptimism has served its time and achieved what it set out for. And now it's getting annoying.

This from someone who's been arguing to take pop seriously since before a lot of this site was shaving. Because I am an old, curmudgeonly bastard.

    Why?

I ask this without knowing if I even have a true understanding of what poptimism is. I've only heard the term a few times and I think I can connect the dots, but your statement about it being "annoying" has me wondering

Wait... you're saying it's popular to think The Weakerthans are better than American Football?

Welp, it's not the first time the popular vote would be significantly wrong.

The new Blink-182 record is horrible. I'm honestly not even confident that Sum 41's will be worse at this point. Matt Skiba added virtually nothing to the band other than a warm body, the music is the same as the last two releases Hoppus has done, and the lyrics sound a like a mix between a teenager whose favorite band is Blink-182 trying out songwriting for the first time and someone making fun of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Also, John K. Samson may not be a better songwriter overall than Mike Kinsella, which is fair, but in no way is American Football better than the Weakerthans.

All Killer is their best album by far. Chuck is their best when I was 16 but All Killer has almost all the songs I'd still listen to.

I've never really felt a part of a "fandom" or anything in music. idk what I'm trying to say lol. I guess the unpopular part is music lovers often seem very invested and take an artist's success very personally and I've always felt a bit detached in that sense. I'm not passionate enough to buy multiple copies of an album or feel like I'm "part of something" if an artist debuts wells on the charts. Maybe cause I've never been super invested in a local scene or anything idk. I support artists I love but I just don't feel that dedicated to their sales.

I support Hanson 150%. A little bit scary if I'm being honest.

I think that kind of behavior is exclusively for young teens who create a whole online presence dedicated to defending their favorite celeb

naw people here do it too about beloved bands. Which again there's nothing wrong with that but I just don't think I feel that invested in anyone.

Closest is prob non-US artists that don't get much exposure so I kinda get the feeling of pride when they do well but not enough to feel that... solidarity? But I'm guessing people have loved certain bands since the early days in their local scenes so the connection runs deep and they support them heavily. Maybe I'm just cheap and disloyal lol

Yeah out of the handful of albums I've enjoyed this year I haven't bought any yet. Spotify takes away any sense of urgency I would have to buy it even though I know artists don't really get paid off streaming

    !!!!

Outside the local level/People that me and the mates know, I'm not too invested into a "fandom" or whatever they call it. But definitely get the feeling from people who don't have those types of associations with the artists they riding. I'll buy a bit of merch but nothing more than that.

I think I'm too lazy to ever go full on stan. Unless the artist wants to pay me for my efforts I'm not going that hard for anyone lol.
