Yea this is really good, glad they really reached out with it. I wasn't the biggest fan of Blame It On My Youth, still not so so much really, so I wasn't sure going into this. But this is good shit.

  3. Yeah, exactly. When it sits by itself it gets a lot more scrutiny. A chorus that people love when they haven't heard it and are listening to the album in full stands out woulda been called pop garbage if it was released by itself. Hard line to walk, which is why I think they did a good job with the singles released. (But, I also really like the bridge in "Happy Days" and think that song got unfairly shit on too. Hah.)

Considering matt's obsession with black water throughout his career as a lyricist, I had this pegged as a Matt song as soon as I saw the title and it sounds like I won't be disappointed with my guess haha

  6. Matt wrote Black Rain while hanging upside down in his coffin

I didn’t hate the singles but damn this is sooo much better than I anticipated

    House of Protect Ron.

It took everything in me to not say anything. He was also under the impression Tom had a feature on the +44 album and that he hopes he pops up on Nine.

This is definitely true. I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of people warming up BIOMY and "I Really Wish I Hated You" in the context of the album. I still think those are two of the best songs on the album.

Side note - I'm digging a lot of the Trio-style tones and +44 vibes, but I will never get tired of the bouncy pop-punk tracks like "The First Time" and "Pin the Grenade". I'm glad this album still kept some of the fun elements from California even though the more serious vibe is a nice change of pace.

Is it possible Darkside just wasn't written or fully finished by the time they decided to release Blame It On My Youth? Otherwise I agree with you, that should have been the lead single.

i still really hate "i really wish i hated you," everything else sounds much better in context especially "happy days"

  13. Possible for sure, I don't know the timing.

(I still think that's the better "radio" single than "Darkside," with DS being the better fan single.)

This is a very good mix of pop and rock. A lot of great hooks. Couple duds, but overall I feel like this has songs that’ll have more lasting power for me than California.
