  2. I will say this... I haven't felt an urge to listen to this song again since the first time I heard it yesterday morning. I've listened to "Blame It On My Youth", "Darkside", and "Generational Divide" a ton of times. This one doesn't give me the "MUST LISTEN AGAIN RIGHT NOW!" feeling.

Was that Tom tweet already posted? My bad. The anti-Tom bias in here is ridiculous though.

Eh, I think most people here still like him, but it's still fun to make fun of a lot of the goofy stuff he does. That's how I feel at least. This thread isn't nearly as bad with the Tom vs. blink stuff as some other places.

Why can’t blink get any decent merch designs? Since ‘09 I feel like all of their merch has been “eh” level quality and design. A few cool things here and there, but now their new merch company is just BAD. They should field ideas from fans who are decent graphic designers.

Another thing is their promotion and fan engagement. I really think they could have such a successful tie with fans with more of an integrated and well thought out release plan. Remember the fun games that were released for Hearts All Gone and After Midnight? It got fans involved with the album release hype. Nowadays it’s like “oh yeah we don’t have an album name yet or artwork.”

A band like twenty one pilots reveals cryptic text and their fans go apeshit figuring out a treasure hunt for a song name or album release date. I get that they are probably way past that stage in their careers, but it could make for a more involved/intimate experience. Might be a dumb take but it’s my favorite band and I feel like this release has been sloppier than past releases.

If you kept everything the same but had a pop vocalist on "She's Out Of Her Mind" many people would hear it and think, "Wow this sounds a lot like Blink" If you swapped out IRWIHY with another artist singing it would be very difficult to connect to Blink. I think it is fair for fans to hear this new batch of songs and say it is heavily influenced by modern pop song co-writing and a clear pop radio sound. There's a difference between internet trolls blindly hating everything and having a valid opinion about a new sound for the band.

This honestly feels a lot like Tom bringing AVA elements into Neighborhoods, but this time Travis is bringing what he does on his pop production songs. It isn't bad, I don't hate it, and I hope it crushes on the radio. It is cool they are pushing forward and progressing, it just isn't personally my favorite batch of songs from Blink.

When they were told to write a hit for TOYPAJ, it was easy to sit down and bang out Rock Show and First Date cause they could be hits in that day. If they're going for a big hit, this is the way to do it, like they've said this is what blink in 2019 would be. I think most of the record will largely be doing what they want to do though, and I don't get the sense they were forced to work with anybody they didn't want to. I like that they're trying different things. I get more on board with them experimenting by the day. I think that EP they have planned for next year will be pretty interesting.

    Things have changed.

We've gotten enough blink songs that "sound" like blink. I want blink songs that DON'T sound like them. Far more compelling at this point in their career to see how they can stretch their limits.

  14. I want Blink to do a whole album of American Football ripoffs next. That'd align more with my current taste, haha.

Yeah, my assumption was going off how the tours feel to me, like they always play the ‘same songs’. I wonder how many of the new album will become ‘part of the set’ for an extended period of time?

Whoever is I charge of their merch is doing them dirty. Do the guys approve of this stuff? I have a hard time believing someone like Mark approving of this stuff given his love for pop culture and art.

Kinda want blink to do a metalcore album and have matt scream with Travis doing blast beats. Rip open into an airy Mark chorus.

It's beyond influenced by pop, it is pop - full stop. And it's totally valid to not enjoy that. I'm complaining specifically about those comments referencing the presence of a pop sound (ie: the absence of riff-driven punk) as inherent evidence that they're somehow artistically bankrupt - producing music that will "sell" over music they're passionate about.

On the contrary, this stuff sounds like music the guys actually listen to these days. The lyrics have seen a decent bump in specificity since California, and the experimentation that's always defined the band from Stay Together for the Kids to I Miss You is obviously back in full force.

Overall, I wish fans could put personal taste aside to at least appreciate the solid creative footing the band has found. Disliking the songs because they don't sound like Blink used to is fine, but the accusatory spin on a lot of the negative feedback is just bizarre and I think generally unkind.

Perhaps when comparing the sound of the new songs with old blink one could argue it is a different sound and justify this as them being creative. But when comparing the sound of the new songs to other music out there (not-blink) then I'd find it hard to call any part of the songs creative. They all sound like other predictable pop/rock songs. I would say that all the new songs do have catchy vocal hooks though.

100% agreed. I respect the drive to do something different. All bets are off, and the three members have their hands in so many diverse projects, there's no chance they were out of creative ideas and needed to co-write an album to have it be successful.

I would eventually like to hear an album that is created in the same vein as Untitled. The three band members locked in a studio, getting weird, and not leaving till they have a progressive masterpiece. Hearing Matt full-on and unrestrained across a full album would be awesome. The initial press had me thinking it was coming on this release and then it got scrapped for what became Nine.

My hope is when they start the Nine tour cycle that they play 6-8 Nine songs, 6 sings from Cali/DXL and then fill in the remaining 10ish songs with whatever (probably the hits/singles).

Hey guys wanted to show you this. Here’s Out Of Service (guitarist is our own @teebs41 ) doing an acoustic cover of ‘Happy Days’!

(If you’re curious what they sound like with their own full band music here’s their album from last year :

One of my favorite things about this new batch of songs is precisely how different they sound from the “Blink sound” yet still sounding undeniably like Blink. While I loved California, the band was definitely trying to recapture the feel of Enema & Take Off, which I think was on purpose to get fans used to Matt in the band. These new songs sound to me like an evolution of the more experimental sounds they were going for on Untitled, Neighborhoods, & Dogs Eating Dogs. It seems to me that now that Matt is more established part of the band they’re going for a natural evolution of what they were doing pre-California & to me that is awesome.
