Who is pretending they’ve accomplished the ultimate goal? That is the inverse of this argument. You are the one over here saying nothing else other than superbowls is a valid measurement of success.

If I were a Browns fan, I'd probably be stoked because it's gonna be a fun enjoyable season. But that doesn't mean a wildcard birth and first-round knockout was a success. Just means it was a good first step.

Idk about you but I’m big on giving credit where it’s due. Jim Kelly and Andre Reed remains one of the best tandems of all time while Bruce Smith is still #2 in sacks all time. It’s unfortunate they never won the big game but they were still a very successful team.

    No...they weren't. They lost.

They were one of the winningest teams of the 90s. That in itself is success in a sports league considering half the teams don’t even have winning records.

Man you sound like Reese Bobby “IF YOU AINT FIRST YOURE LAST”

Except you’re not high when you say that, you soberly mean it lol

    (:

This is completely inaccurate when it comes to a team that's been bad for so long.

I'll make sure to look for "One Of The Winningest Teams Of The 90s" on a banner somewhere if I ever make it to Buffalo lol.

Credit where it’s due. The 49ers never won with Harbaugh but I still will always remember Patrick Willis and Frank Gore as two of my favorite players of the time.

Anyway...back to making fun of Joe Flacco?

There's a difference between looking back fondly and acknowledging players were good and being like "eh, who cares that they lost the most important game."

Lmao I don’t need banners that say “hey guys look at our accomplishments” to root for my football team. Acting like that matters is really shallow.

Jim Tomsula never happening would be a big deal from the 49ers side. Kaep having a steady offense and coach for his year 4+5 season would have been big too.

And I think Flacco signs that first deal for sure, but I think he goes the way of Kaep before signing the 2nd big deal...but he's the less compelling side than Kaep/49ers side. Though Harbaugh going exactly .500 for 5 years collectively might not have ended as cleanly without the ring.

Again, you keep bringing it back to like validating who a person roots for like i'm telling everyone in this thread they're stupid for liking their teams. That's never been anywhere near my argument. All I've said is 32 teams are trying to accomplish something and in any given year there is one team who successfully accomplishes it and 31 who fail to do so.

    Literally though who cares lmao

Honestly? Who cares? It doesn’t stop anyone from saying they enjoyed watching that team in the mid 2000s. Doesn’t stop a 49er fan from being proud of their Willis jersey or having good memories of attending games they won at the time.

Yeah, I'm done with this. You're so far removed from what I was saying and consistently hammering home a point that I haven't been arguing at all.

That’s just so harsh. Are there not different levels of success that can be a source of pride depending on the context? For me I’m proud of my Jags any year they contend and whatever happens in the playoffs is what happens. I am still proud of 2017.

I just don’t see the merit in taking a team that went like 15-3 including two playoff victories and saying they “failed” because they lost the SB. I see that as being quite successful, despite not reaching the ultimate goal there’s no way to do that well without accomplishing a lot of smaller goals along the way

Idk one playoff win for Stafford would feel like a success for me given the brand of football I’ve been watching and rooting for for 26 years

I just think your point doesn’t matter cause we all still love and root for our teams. So you centering an entire discussion around teams only being significant and memorable if they win superbowls just comes off like a reallly pretentious Pats fan thing to say. It almost comes off like “why do you bother watching, your team isn’t doing anything meaningful and is just gonna disappoint you”

If all I cared about was whether or not we won the Super Bowl, then I wouldn’t be a fan of any NFL team. They’re so elusive and rare, outside of the extreme minority that is the current 20-year Patriots dynasty, that living with a teams’ ups and downs is a part of being a fan.

As long as we improve on the previous season, then I consider it a successful season.

Okay...so i'm gonna go line by line.

"I just think your point doesn’t matter cause we all still love and root for our teams." Cool, enjoy, never told you not to otherwise.

"So you centering an entire discussion around teams only being significant and memorable if they win superbowls just comes off like a reallly pretentious Pats fan thing to say." Not sure how i'm centering the discussion since you brought it back from like 5 pages ago. I never said you can't be significant or memorable to people without winning the Super Bowl, all I said was that the goal is to win the Super Bowl, and 31 teams fail to do so. It's been my entire argument. I cited the 2007 Patriots as my perfect example. I could give a rats ass they went 16-0 because they lost game 19. That sucks. That was a failed season. I still think re-living the blowouts is fun now and then and enjoy how much Brady/Moss torched people, but that doesn't change that they failed to accomplish the goal of winning the Super Bowl.

"It almost comes off like “why do you bother watching, your team isn’t doing anything meaningful and is just gonna disappoint you." First, nice edit. Never really saw you do it, only heard about it. Second, there's plenty of reasons to watch and enjoy a team even if they're not in contention. Because it's about the process to being in contention and accomplishing the ultimate goal of winning a super bowl. That's why they're all playing.

I think this topic goes along with if you’re a player, would you rather have a ring or two, or in the Hall of Fame with no ring?
