Gordon + Jones >>>>>>> just Jones

Well, obviously, but that doesn't convince me in any way that the Packers would be a better team by adding a RB

No way a team is trading more than a 3rd for Gordon, not a lot of teams have the cap space to give him what he wants either.

Also, Gordon would help the packers a lot. It's not a very packers move though.

I just dont see how adding a near elite player wouldnt improve them at all

The packers have never had a back that good in all of Rodgers tenure, it's actually wild how bad the packers rbs have been since Rodgers has started for the packers.

Apologies if this is the wrong thread, but anyone want in on a last minute draft? Three spots open and we will draft tomorrow night.

I've never said he wouldn't help them at all. I'm arguing against your thought that he'd help them "tremendously" and that he would be a "solution" for that offense.

Having a strong running game takes pressure off the QB, no?

Packers rbs are so bad that Rodgers is their 13th all time leading rusher, James starks is 15th lol

The best one he's ever had? Ryan Grant for 2 seasons. His best year was 2009 when he lead them to a Super Bowl.

Last year Gordon was on pace for his best season ever with 5.1 ypc and that was with an mcl injury that kept him out for 4 games. Ryan Grant never had more than 4.4 ypc, during that super bowl year.

I agree with @PeacefulOrca. The Packers would greatly benefit with Gordon but they’ll probably draft Najee Harris instead

Packers would be the team that made sense for Gordon except he wants a top RB deal they cant afford. They can sort of afford him this year and next if they cut Jimmy Graham after the season (likely)...but, any real cap savings beyond that are in the form of cutting O-lineman, which is backwards at best.

They make more sense going all-in than Houston did...

@socklord and I had a whole argument where he believes that you can only pass to open up the run, not the other way around.

Normally he’s rock solid but I personally think that particular perspective is a very Madden way of looking at football haha, naive to think Gordon wouldn’t shred a defense that always called zone defenses in sub packages to stop Rodgers

Establishing quick, efficient passes on early downs will take the pressure off Rodgers. Not to mention a new HC who should be diversifying the playbook more than McCarthy did for the last five years or so.

However, this is also the QB who is completely willing to hold onto the ball way longer than he needs to in order to look for a big play down the field instead of taking an easy throw in front of him, thus resulting in more sacks so I'm sure he'll bring pressure to himself with or without Gordon

He’s the reason Rivers faces so much man-to-man which has elevated him recently.

Maybe he'll feel less compelled to throw downfield if things opened up for him

What do you mean? Rodgers already does this often? There’s a lot of instant-grits reads in the Packers playbook

Not really because a team that’s good at running the ball can expose teams that send too many blitzes. DL can easily get so caught up chasing Rodgers and when you pass rush, you don’t anchor - so it’s likeky they’d get caught off guard by a strong rushing attack. Gordon is a beast at outflanking the pass rush on outside zone runs.

@socklord I just think you’re not recognizing that it just adds another thing the defense has to pay a lot of attention to. Even just 3-4 plays a game that Gordon rips off chunks of yards is gonna make that DC adjust his whole strategy and feel less secure keying in on Rodgers. Plays designed to stop an elite passing attack tend to be quite vulnerable against interior runs, and suddenly you can’t rely on that anymore.

I'm not really interested in discussing this further again since everybody seems to dug into their stances. I'm just not very "establish the run guys and your offense will be better!" It's really not that simple.

    Pick your RB

    RB A: 170car for 943yds (5.5ypc), 11 TD | 40 targets, 28cat for 199yds (7.1 ypc), 1TD
    RB B: 175car for 885yds (5.1ypc), 10 TD | 66 targets 50cat for 490yds (9.8ypc) 4TD

RB A is Aaron Jones in games he's received more than 10 carries (12 games total) and RB B is Melvin Gordon last year (12 games, 11 where he had 10+ carries).

Dont think you could convince me to give up a mid-rounder and $13mil/yr AAV for the difference

A running game not helping an offense is certainly a take.
