Like, do the math...Brissett comes out and is a borderline top 10 QB like they think he can be...you think he's playing 2020 on a contract year deal at $15mil AAV while Watson is signing his 5yr/$160mil/$100guar deal?

They have to rip up this deal and hand him the big 5 year deal then anyway. And if they say "we believed in you before you proved it", his agent is still gonna say

Brissett gets paid significantly more than he’s ever made regardless of performance this year

Colts use this year’s cap space to not have to pay as much next year. If he’s a top 10 QB, who cares about money, that’s a huge win and he earned that pay check this year. If he’s a mid-tier QB, you have the flexibility to let the draft/FA come to you, rather than everyone having leverage over you that you have to have a QB, and you don’t have to play the FA game with a mediocre QB who probably wants more than a 1 year deal. If he’s bleh, you have a cost controlled bridge QB to your future QB.

 

I mean, that's what the Hoyer deal is.

Only QB I can think of that made a team regret not signing him long-term before breaking out is Joe Flacco, and if he had walked on them after the SB, it might have been the best thing that happened to that Ravens team.

 

"Is Joe Flacco elite" will haunt my dreams.

 

Per this logic, Foles is also not a good starter quality quarterback

(I’m joking — I think Brissett’s ceiling is roughly Dak level and his floor is what you’re describing and he probably land somewhere in between. I’ll let him play a few games with a not awful supporting cast before writing him off though)

You’re telling me you would willingly start Hoyer in NFL football games and expect to win if a rookie QB isn’t ready?

This is where we differ, of course...I'm assuming if you're drafting a rookie QB high, its because you went 5-11 and are expecting to go 6-10 at best.

But yeah, Eli Manning is starting for the Giants...Case Keenum is starting for the Redskins...Joe Flacco is starting for the Broncos...3 of the top 4 QBs taken have a washed up vet starting over them because their teams know they arent competitors precisely because they were drafting new QBs.

I don’t get why you don’t just make that player happy so he doesn’t even THINK about free agency. You’re not gonna find pass rushers like that left and right. We have the opportunity to have Yannick Ngakoue and Josh Allen as our franchise pass rushers and be top 5 in the league at DE for a decade. Is there even a question that we should lock that shit up as soon as it makes sense??
