Superman has literally never held any of my interest, which is odd to me considering I really enjoy Batman and other super hero stories. I'm familiar enough with his back story but have yet to watch a single film/TV show/comic that is focused on Superman. Maybe I will, one day

Try All-Star Superman sometime. It's an excellent love letter to the character and easily my favorite Superman story.

Yeah perhaps I just need the proper entry point. As a kid, I never watched superhero cartoons and only really got on Batman because of the films, for better or worse, which I really enjoyed

    Thank you!

No problem. He's not an easy character because he easily becomes the most vanilla hero ever, but I really like him as the personification of hope, which All-Star Superman leans heavily into. He's a godlike figure who protects the oppressed, set from an advanced civilization, representing the best of both faith and science/reason in a sincere attempt to make the world better.

If anyone's interested in an ongoing series, DC announced a new comic called New Super-Man, which will be written by a Chinese-American writer named Gene Luen Yang and star a new young Superman-type character in Shanghai.

    Could be a cool series.

  8. I think this every day. I love, love, love Marvel Unlimited. It would be perfect for DC to come out with something similar especially considering they're starting up their own cinematic universe.

I'm still really upset about the bathtub scene. Especially when Clark then gets in the tub with her fully clothed. Also still grossed out by Lex Luthor's snot.

As soon as I saw her in a tub in a trailer, I started dreading that scene. So ridiculous.

mhmmm. The one book, other than Red Son, that I've truly loved.

  12. I was very disappointed in not more shirtless Clark. The scene in MoS where he's shirtless still might be the biggest muscles that have ever just made me laugh out loud at how it looks almost too perfect.

Man of Steel would have been much better if it was just this.

I started cracking up during the one scene that starts on his boobs. What a weird choice of angle

I love Cavill's physique. Not to get weird about it, though he is over the top good looking with a ridiculous body, I love how physical his Superman is. Compared to Brandon Routh, Tom Welling, and even Christopher Reeve, he actually looks like the comic book Superman. Not that the muscles are everything, but it does translate very well onscreen.

I also think Cavill is really solid in the role. It sucks that the overall dour aesthetic of the film mutes him, because I've seen in the Man from U.N.C.L.E. and his general interviews that he has a natural upbeatness and sense of humor that would really boost his Superman performance.

I think if you just let Cavill be Cavill he would probably be the best supes.

I feel like Snyder had something to do with this. He is a firm believer in the spectacle and it is the primary means by which the characters relate to each other and the audience. So, I could envision a scenario in which he was like, "we need to show how strong superman is. I'm not sure how to convey it.....fuck it. Henry, work out eight hours a day and get big muscles."

@Dominick He uses the same trainer for all his films, since 300. It's absolutely something that he plays up intentionally and while part of it is the current climate of mainstream American movies (Chris Hemsworth, Michael B. Jordan, Chris Pratt, their workouts are emphasized more than any other prep for their roles), Snyder in particular places a maybe misguided importance on it. It plays in to how over-masculine his films are, and while that could be interesting if Batman v. Superman had ended up a critical deconstruction of the male power fantasy... Snyder doesn't really tap into that, haha

The guys I deployed with did Cavill's workout. If you just google 'man of steel workout' you can get the whole thing. It beats the shit out of you, but you'll see HUGE results in two or three months. It was really incredible how good of shape these guys got into.

  23. I feel this exact same way and it bums me out even more on this movie. I think that charm should have come through. It's the kinda thing where now I wish someone else could take over the helm simply so we could still use this Superman, in a much better way, before they inevitably recast.

My biggest concern is follow-up films. Having Gotham and Metropolis so close together, how can you do a stand alone Batman film without Superman's interaction? I know Marvel kinda just says, "Oh, those guys are busy." But you have a god that is just across the river. I just don't know about that.
