I'm seeing Dragged Into Sunlight, Primitive Man, and Cult Leader tonight. Stoked for feelings of misery and despair, fam.

    duh.

haha, really though, I love it too. I do miss the God City production a bit, but whoever they worked with on this one did a good job as well. And, I can respect them wanting to try something new.

I honestly can't think of a metal record with production I like more than this in recent years. Most of what I've heard either deliberately eschews clarity for effect (Baroness/Deafheaven) or goes with the sample-replaced overly clean trend that's been dominating for a decade. This one sounds impeccable.

Killswitch and all that metal core stuff that's impossibly clean

I was referring to the sample technique - how does it work?

Conan's new record is pretty good if you haven't checked that out yet.

I think it's popular to replace certain parts of recordings with samples right now in certain genres. Seems to be for tone reasons primarily. Ive heard it on alot of snares and toms in metalcore. not a fan of alot of sounds going on in that genre

Like the drummer will play his take. Then then producer will find his best snare hit and replace every snare hit with that one. Then find the best bass drum hit. Replace. Etc. They can also "beat detect" aka quantize every hit to be in perfect time. It leads to this impossibly clean sound which works great in some cases and sounds really sterile in others

some of it is some really poor midi samples too

Eh, sampling happens all over the place. Singling out metal core is a bit short-sighted. For example, I'm willing to bet that alot of post processing goes on to give these new black metal bands their sounds. Unless you Believe that every blast beat recorded sounds perfectly identical lol.

I don't care if something sounds "sterile" or mechanical if it suits the music well.

I don't like when drums have bad tone. There's been some completely homogenous mixing and processing as a trend in the genre. At least there was several years ago.

I like the drums on Gorgoroth's original Under the Sign of Hell, so there LOL

No snare drum sound in modern metal will ever top St. Anger in terms of how horrible it sounds. That's all I have to contribute to this topic.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the first songs they released initially, but the new Kvelertak ended up being great.

Sect are sounding pretty good. Always nice to have new music from Chris Colohan.
