I don't know if it's 'unpopular' as in 'disliked' but I think Firework's Oh, Common Life is one of the most criminally underrated albums of this decade and a massive step forward for pop-punk as a whole. The pain on display in that album is so palpable and real, and yet they managed to fit it to the structure of pop-punk. When that album finally clicked for me, it was like 'getting' blink-182's self-titled for the first time: realized how shades and textures and emotions still lie untapped in the genre.

Also, the consensus on If I'm the Devil... is that it's bad? What the fuck is wrong with people? That thing is a work of genius!

The new Blink album is a regressive piece of work that feels like it was written in auto pilot.

Time will tell if I still feel that way in a few months but I can't help feel there was way more potential with Skiba on board.

    I actually prefer Neighbourhoods.

I definitely don't prefer Neighborhoods, but I came to the hard realization that I think maybe blink just doesn't appeal to me anymore, which sucks because I love all their past work. This one just didn't click with me, but I also don't think it's bad record.

I listened to it all weekend and only return to 5 songs. The good part is, their five songs that I didn't have prior to the album being released, so I'll take them!

I don't mind Neighborhoods or California, but I get where you're coming from. I think California is certainly the tightest and most polished sounding work blink have put out in years, but it does seem like it's lacking a certain 'adventurousness' in parts, and I agree that I don't think Skiba was used to his full potential here. I imagine they're still playing it close to the chest...

I never hated Neighborhoods, and it's actually grown on me more and more through the years, but it still is proof positive that blink as a band need an outside producer to help reign in their ideas. Still, there is a certain 'Je ne sais quois' that Tom brings to the proceedings, which I think makes some of the songs on Neighborhoods catchier than anything on California.

Funnily enough, my favorite tracks on California (so far) are "Los Angeles" and "Sober", which are probably the least 'traditional' sounding tracks on the record!

I kinda know what you mean. I went through a phase where I thought I was too old to listen to blink anymore. I got out of it. For me personally the record just offers me nothing that their other releases can't. It could just be however, that there are other releases I am more occupied with this year though.

I hated Neighborhoods when it first dropped. It wasn't until I saw them play some live that I went back and listened to it and liked it.

I think the production completely kills Skiba's voice on this one. It feels restrained.

I don't think it's necessarily that the album is it adventurous. To me a lot of it just sounds like a reserved version of their slightly older stuff. It sounds like a lost album from between the TOYPAJ and Untitled years.

I'm not sure the consensus on here is that it's bad necessarily; I think the majority opinion on here is that it's average. It's just that because letlive are capable of writing brilliant music, the focus is largely negative.

Oh, Common Life sounds like fall out boy, sonically. Vocals are over the top similar to my chemical romance. Musically it has more in common with All Time Low and other overproduced bands in the genre. I'm surprised anybody is honestly comparing anything to Blink as a good thing, but to each their own.

For unpopular opinions: I think Hip Hop is awful. Outside of loosely hip hop inspired acts like Death Grips or sleaford mods (that I don't even actively listen to), I haven't found anything I'm able to enjoy. Eminem, Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, nothing appeals to me.

Yeah I think people love that album, I feel it gets overlooked by the wall and dark side though as well.

I dunno, most responses I've seen to the album have been of the 'it's a piece of shit' variety, yours is the most 'neutral' on the nagative spectrum I've seen so far.

Personally, I think it sounds like the logical next step for the band. I think it's magnificent how they managed to incorporate so much more melody while still keeping their trademark intensity.

Of course, I'm also the guy who thinks that Say Anything's new record is fantastic, so I don't think my opinion counts for much these days.

    (Or ever, really.)

....sooooo.... ...You don't enjoy any music, I take it?

Have you ever tried any Mos Def? Talib Kweli? Common? The Roots? I didn't like rap in high school until a friend of mine introduced me to those artists. A lot of late 80's/early 90's hip hop also has a real emphasis on drumming as the backbone of most beats, which I really enjoy.

I agree on not liking modern rap and leaning more towards the late 80's/90's hip hop. Public Enemy all the way :-)

Anyone who would be intractable enough to flat out say this or that genre is awful is not a good conversational partner worthy of trying to convince otherwise.

I think the sound of it might well have been the next logical step for them, I just think they executed it fairly badly and consequently made quite a mediocre album. I actually listened to it again today and I still have the same general thoughts as I did on my first listen. Jason's voice is the only thing that pulls me in and even that doesn't end up doing as much for me as it could; I still can't believe how bad the chorus to Another Offensive Song is.

The album's, at best, a 6/10 for me unfortunately.
