Seeing a lot of chatter on twitter about how the guy was licensed to carry, followed the officers instructions, didn't have a criminal record etc...

does bringing up stuff like that help things, because it shows the cops will kill black people regardless of how closely they follow the rules, or hurt, because it reinforces the narrative that people without a perfect record like Alton Sterling deserved to die?

because every time a black person is executed in the streets, White America will dig into their history to find out if they ever so much as skipped a fucking stop sign to say they deserved to die.
you can be a saint or a career criminal, but all that matters is having brown/black skin for to get an automatic death sentence

white man talking here, but i think it helps. The narratives to justify the Alton Sterlin murders of the world are awful, harmful, and shows how many people really don't get it and fail to see the bigger issues at play. Changing people's minds in those instances are just too hard (doesn't mean you shouldn't try)

but i mean, here, here we have a story of a 100% law abiding citizen, doing EVERYTHING a cop telling him to do, and he STILL dies for it.....maybe i'm naive here, but i think this is the type of story that will finally get people to wake up (i'm fucking stupid because that won't happen unfortunately)

but this is one white man's opinion on the matter.

doesn't matter because being black is a crime in America.
i haven't run the research but i am still 99% sure Philando Castile isn't the first black man without a criminal record to be killed by police

We all knew already that resisting arrest was one of the many things that is punishable by death only for black men. We can add lawfully exercising one's 2nd Amendment right to that list.

    Seriously America. Gun control

Not to be on a high horse but we don't have this problem in the UK.

Fuck the second amendment. It's called an amendment. It can be changed. People need to really wake up and realise that the world was a very different place in the 1700s when those laws were made.

But that's not the real issue here, I just think it would take the cheat out of these confrontations.

The real issue is that these cops seem unhinged. It's like they are just waiting for an excuse to use their weapon. There seems to be a real warped mentality among sections of the American population (like these police) that are trained to assume all black people are a threat.

Worst of all, nothing seems to be done about it

it's been shown time and time again that most Americans support basic background checks and regulations on gun ownership but the NRA will time and time again buy off however many congresspeople they need in order to prevent that from happening.

I guess my worry is that like, say just this once justice is served and the cop gets punished... cop apologists will undoubtedly use it as an opportunity to say "See, the system does deal with bad cops when they are wrong"

I agree with the sentiment behind this comment, but it's worth pointing out that these people are racists before they are cops and before they have guns. I honestly believe that the cop that shot Philando Castile wanted to shoot someone that day - like you say they are literally just waiting for an excuse; an excuse to pull a black man over, then, with Alton Sterling fresh in his mind, an excuse to use his weapon. Police shouldn't be given guns, but then people like Sandra Bland were still killed by the police without guns...

The new normal is watching black people die live on Facebook. And they'll still find a reason we are to blame. Non-violence isn't an option any longer.

Take arms, it'll all blow over Prestigious

Just dumbfounding. The moral licensing deal is concerning, because you just know that's how things will play out, White america can feel like the good guys when this cop is convicted and will return to business as usual when another black man is gunned down needlessly and heartlessly by the police.

Not to be controversial but I don't think The issue is as simple as they are racist.

It highlighted the subtlety of racism and how it manifests.

For me, from the cops reacting it doesn't seem a simple case of "oh I want to shoot this black guy"

It's a mentality that leads his suspicion to be that any black man carrying a weapon wants to use that weapon to commit a crime.

Eradicate the guns and you wouldn't have such a heated exchange where a simple reaching for a license doesn't come with the opportunity to reach for a gun.

We have a situation with two guys with guns, the cop being unnecessarily hostile because of the perceived threat of someone having access to a gun, combined with some skewed profiling. The cops reacting gets his adrenaline up and he's not acting rationally.

In England (and other gun free countries) this is a simple case of "license please" "yes sir". The presence of the gun in the first place adds the possibility of threat. Possibility being the key word because there is no rational, logical way of knowing which gun carriers are a threat and which are not.

For me it's a combination of that and racism manifested that creates situations like this.

I think we're in agreement - me saying "wanted to" missed the mark. What I was trying to say was that the assuming of threat & the profiling at play were racism "in action" so to speak, and that those who display racism are racist by definition, aren't they?

The uncomfortable part of race-relations for white people like me is the fact that, while we do not go around calling POC names/slurs, we can still be racist (often without realising it). White people who do not accept and confront that will always be racist. Its what brings about those quotes like "it's not the burden of the victims to comfort the bystander" - any other excuse other than racism in cases like these is a case of white people refusing to confront said racism.

The two cops who killed those two black men are, unavoidably, racists - that is my opinion on the matter and, as always, I welcome the input of (most) others on this site correcting me if I am wrong in any way.

Holy Christ this is even worse, he literally was licensed to carry, he told the officer he was, he was reaching for his wallet which the officer told him to do... Shot three times.

Just getting caught up with the news of these 2 incidents. Absolutely disgusting. Saw the video of Alton Sterling and I'm just completely disturbed, saddened, and angered all at once. I have no words.

I may be stating the obvious here, but...The fact that one of the officers yells "get on the ground!" after opening fire on Alton (while he is literally already lying on the ground) just makes me think that they knew he/they had messed up and he was just covering his/their tracks in case a bystander was out of sight but in earshot...So awful.
