I don't have too many more to add to the discussion, but I'm gonna throw Boots Riley out there, even though he's only done one film. It was so bonkers and left a huge impression.

I'd also like to nominate Hiro Murai since he's directed most of my favorite TV episodes from this decade.

 

A lot of the filmmakers that I thought of had one or two films in the previous decade so are ineligible.

It is hard to quantify at this stage. We are used to a lot of directors starting very bold, but a lot of the all time greats started pretty humbly before it all really came together.

 

Reading all of the FOX-Disney stuff is depressing. For years I thought that superhero movies and the Oscars were the true villain, but the true threat to film is a corporate behemoth destroying everything in its path.

I feel like society left Comedy Central by itself and assumed it would die but instead it’s only grown and mutated and now we’re powerless to stop it.

one of the worst aspects of modern films is how they always feel the need to actually show vomiting. please just have actors go back to sticking their head in the toilet and make sounds. there's nothing to be gained here

Is that really more common now than any other time? Showing people puking instead of cutting away isn’t exactly new.

 

It absolutely is lol. I very rarely see movies cut away anymore

 

I can’t even think of a recent movie that had it at all. New ST did but that’s another area I guess. I associate that more with gross out comedies and those are definitely less common now than in the past.

 

The scene in I Love You, Man is classic. Still gets me every time.

 

A perfectly timed vomit is always hilarious to me.

 

Over the course of my life vomiting in movies had definitely gone from me not expecting it to be shown and going “oh shit that’s hilarious/wild” once it happened to me knowing that it is coming before it even happens. I don’t really care but it was definitely funnier in the beginning.

 

My friend's kinda like this, she's a huge fan of horror, way before I developed an interest in it, but we have completely opposite tastes haha

 

After I read this thread I think I saw three different movies with vomit shots today.

 

realistic vomit, much like realistic violence, or realistic sex, or... well.... literally ANYthing that would happen in a movie.... works well if you do it well, its that simple.
