It’s weird because in my mind I know his first album only came out in 06, but because of his age, the way he carries himself and because he’s kind of an album artist (as in he releases mostly albums), in my mind I more associate him with like the generation of rappers that started in the 90s.

 

I actually agree, I kept forgetting how "new" he was while I went through

 

It helps that his discography is so extensive - he’s closing in on people like Nas, Jay, LL and surpassed artists like DMX and Busta Rhymes - yet he somehow still manages to make his album feel like events.

 

For those who, like me, have a weakness for rapping athletes: Damian Lillard aka Dame D.O.L.L.A put out a new album a few days ago. I haven’t listened to it though so don’t blame me if it sucks.

 

Any favorite rap songs by athletes that aren’t Shaq?

I’ve sort of been doing this too lately, but out of order. The first Port of Miami is incredibly spotty and he hasn’t gotten his “voice” yet.

Aesop Rock can be pretty cool though lol

 

i mean a lot of blame rests in her marketing team and the way they pushed her as pop. which is why she has the #4 song in the country, if she was pushed as a purely rap artist i doubt she'd be there.

 

also genres can be restrictive, especially for someone who can play flute while twerking

 

TBF people have done studies on his lyrical output and dissecting the amount of words he uses. For sheer inventiveness and wordplay, not many come close to him.
