Every time I see the whole Tim Lambesis thing come up again, I get baffled by how many people (particularly Jake Luhrs) completely misunderstand how repentance, forgiveness, etc., work in a biblical sense. You don't just get to declare "forgiveness" the way Michael Scott declared "bankruptcy."

Like, people in Scripture who were awful & then redeemed didn't get to just go back to life as normal. I mean, heck, King David ("a man after God's own heart") was told he wasn't allowed to be the one to build the temple because of his past actions. The entire crux of Christian theology, the whole cross idea, doesn't work if accountability is just a convenient feeling w/out any repercussions.

I know a lot of y'all probably don't care about theology, but like, as Chorus' resident pastor-in-training... Even by this worldview, come on, that's bullshit.

 

As a non-religious person who doesn’t know scripture hardly at all, I appreciate these insights.

 

I don't think the misunderstanding is accidental. It's willful and used to subjugate and control, the way it has been for centuries. "Forgiveness" is used as some messed up kind of NDA, and as a tool of manipulation against the vulnerable for the benefit of those in (societal) power. (Note: I don't disagree with you. I'm just adding on that I see this misuse as being intentional and deliberate.)

Not to be too on the nose here, but it's done in extremely bad faith.

 

I don’t know if anyone would even remember him, but after Instagram creeping on Hance Alligood (ex Woe Is Me, Favorite Weapon) I noticed his fiancé is 22 and he’s 28. They’ve been together since she was 17 and he was 23. Gross.

 

I'm glad someone said this. Repentance isn't simply feeling shame... it's a full turning away from your sin, even an intense grieving over what you've done. Coming back saying "I'm sorry, I wouldn't do it again" and going about your life like nothing's happened is not repentance. "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise."

Meanwhile, I'm just standing here angry that they had to put a Brand New shirt in there. Fuck you, TheHardTimes. The only time you should be mentioning Brand New is as one of the greatest critically acclaimed indie rock bands of the 2000s. Don't drag them down with this crap, people are supposed to have forgotten or not give a shit about Lacey's misconduct by now, it's been nearly two years!

Actually I'm not going to bother with the troll and just say this: regardless of what else the other members of Brand New did in their career, they are complicit in Jesse Lacey's misconduct and didn't address the allegations one way or the other when the story broke. Their legacy doesn't mean shit.
