  1. Anyone with a platform and audience needs to weigh: I am getting exposure to new people versus I am exposing new people to this thing that I am going on or participating in.

I think about that calculus all the time. I don’t think many do, and I don’t think it’s a net positive for politicians to think any exposure is good without weighing the negative outcomes as well.

That’s a principle I try and live by, and I think Bernie has been wrong on it for a while.

That worldview doesn't make a lot of sense for a politician. It sounds awfully close to requiring that they stay in an echo chamber and hope their preexisting supporters magically become enough to win elections.

The argument I usually see against venturing outside the echo chamber is that it doesn't do any good anyway. That clearly applies to disingenuous platforms whose only aim is to tear you down. Going on Hannity, Tucker Carlson, or even Rubin's podcast almost certainly falls into that category. This doesn't. Rogan's audience is clearly rife with a certain subgroup of persuadable voters (a fairly small overall group in this era), and Rogan clearly has no aim to sabotage someone like Bernie. The concern about a sliver of Bernie viewers YouTube-hopping to Alex Jones and falling in love isn't completely unfounded, but if we're weighing that against real Presidential votes potentially changing for the better, the calculus that favors shunning Rogan seems much fuzzier than you're putting forth.

The Tool “stop bringing up accusations every day” supporter has weighed in. I feel comfortable with my stance and don’t trust your calculus at all.

I just realized that the asshat rep from Montana is running for gov...so not only could Bullock run for a senate seat, there’s also an open Rep seat for the taking.

Maybe Rogan gets new Bernie fans, but I doubt the math is on his side exactly because he is so blank. Bernie got to clearly advocate his platform for an hour, and I think that valuable, I also think he is strong in that kind of setting because he's been talking about the same things for years.

Rogan didn't advocate a platform, he just sat there let Bernie talk, agreed with him or said some weird shit. I think this is stronger exposure from Bernie than Rogan, and definitely a few steps a way from Rogan's fucked up guests and worse beliefs.

I think as a gateway program, it can't be ignored. The majority of people listening aren't fully radicalized, but they can't be if that show keeps feeding bullshit and toxic ideologies. These are people that can and should be reached, because with the right understanding their ideas can change, and they're at a malleable point where there is value in trying.

I think if you haven’t watched the Bernie interview on Rogan you should watch it. Maybe then you’ll see why i think it was beneficial.

by the time we're done hand wringing over which platforms in the marketplace of ideas we should go on or not go on more people like Jones and Shapiro have already been on and used 5 more platforms to spread hate and radicalize people.

Joe Rogan is wrong for having those people on, no fucking shit. Twitter is wrong for letting them continue to post the shit they post. So is Facebook. But I legitimately do not see a way to change that before election day 2020. They refuse to moderate extreme right wing content. We're not punishing them when we refuse to engage. We're stifling our own ideas and giving up on people who could here our ideas and agree.

Is this ideal? No, but we don't have options.

I can’t stand Rogan but legit asking: how should Bernie get new ears listening if he doesn’t try stuff like going on his show?

the right has been using alternative media to widen their reach for years. years. if not joe rogan then what show should he have gone on to battle the right wing dominance of alternative media? i guarantee if bernie goes on chapo trap house you get the same exact complaints so, where should he have gone? should he just completely ignore this giant voting bloc of young indecisive people who feel completely disaffected and betrayed by the system to the extent that they either dont vote at all or dont recognize the consequences of a donald trump presidency/second term? because in my estimation that's the vast majority of rogan listeners. like ive been saying, this isnt a shapiro or dave rubin show. rogan's audience is wildly different than your typical right wing podcasts and webshows. obviously fuck rogan, fuck the right wing dudes like rubin and shapiro that he buddies up with, but look at the guests he has on. he isnt only inviting on right wing talking heads, he isnt only talking about politics, the topics vary so greatly that his audience is only somewhat compromised of overtly political people. leftists like kyle kulinski have gone on rogan and have received significant fan mail from people who saw his appearance and admitted they started second guessing their right wing stances. this is something that absolutely happens when left wingers use rogan's platform as a tool for themselves. if leftists ignore it and just allow him to keep having right wingers on when it comes to politics, those apolitical rogan listeners are only hearing one side non stop. in addition to rogan being a lightweight interview that's another reason why radicalization happens: they arent exposed to the other side in a fair manner, just through the caricatures shapiro and the like make the left out to be.
