Welcome!!!!! After discussing in the Feminism thread, we have decided to start a monthly book club open to all women, nonbinary people, and trans men on the website. Cis men pls do not interact as this thread is not for you.

    GUIDELINES:
    • Please do not join or post if you are a cis man. You are free to lurk but please consider that most threads on this site are male-dominated. This is meant to be a safe space for other genders to discuss literature.
    • Each month, one member of the book club will select a book for us to read. Please try to keep your selection under 400 pages to account for busy schedules and slower readers.
    • Books do not have to be by female, trans, or nonbinary authors, but let's try to prioritize them!
    • We will pick a date to finish reading each month and spend time in the thread discussing the book. Due to the nature of forum discussions, I suggest we leave a week after the finish date for discussion!
    • I'll update this post each month with the book, links to purchase it, and who picked it. I'll also update the member list as needed.
    • I hope that this will pull some of our lurking female/non-cis male posters out and bring us together. We're excited to have you!

    Member list:
    @personalmaps, @K0ta, @Kiana, @mad, @EASheartsVinyl, @awwgereee, @Anna Acosta, @Keri, @chhholly123, @Jams, @figureitout, @supernovagirl

    This month's pick:

    Thanks to @K0ta!
    • Beloved, by Toni Morrison
    • Support your local library or book shop and check there first! Check out Overdrive or Hoopla to see if you can get a free e-book or audiobook with your library card.
    • Purchase on Amazon, Purchase at Barnes and Noble
    Previous picks:
    • xoxo

Yaaaay! I love the idea and that I don’t have to pick first. I am super into the idea of doing a Toni Morrison one soon since that was mentioned in the other thread.

Beloved by Toni Morrison. It's her most iconic and well-known work and it seems at least two of us hasn't had the chance to read it! I contemplated her last book, The Source of Self-Regard, a series of essays which explores a lot about race, feminism, and other important topics but it's apparently very self-referential to her other works so I don't think it's a good entry point for those of us with little to no exposure to her works.

If anybody has read Beloved and would like us to do something different, my second choice would probably be Paradise. It sounds extremely dark but also fascinating.

Let's give everyone a few days to secure the book from somewhere. Maybe we can plan to begin discussion on September 14th?

  12. I am interested in joining! September I may have to skip because I just checked and it's a 7 week wait at the library. If I can make it to the next bigger city to join theirs, then I will.

I will see if I can track down any other free (legal) ways to read the book.

If you guys aren’t familiar with programs like Hoopla or Overdrive, you can download them from the App Store and use your library card to sign up for free e-books and audiobooks!

edit: updated OP with links for those services and new members :)

i’ve been meaning to tell you

Hello I basically never post but I was just looking for a book club earlier today so I'd say this is pretty serendipitous. I've never read Beloved either, great pick.

Y’all I’ve always wanted to join a book club so I am so excited about this!! Would love to join! I normally get my books from the online library but there are 75 people waiting boo! Another library says they have it so hopefully I can get a ride there before someone else snags it.

Omg I may just buy a cheap used copy of beloved because I live in the middle of nowhere so the only copy of the book is in the library an hour away. Can they like... Ship books to a library closer to you?

Hi @stayillogical, we have never talked but we're starting a Chorus book club for women/non-binary folk so if you're interested let us know!

Idk how it is where you are but my local library can ship books to other libraries and other libraries ship to them. They're all in a little library network though. It usually takes about a week for them to do it but sometimes it's a couple weeks.

My library doesn't have it. This is the worlds dumbest question but do u need a Kindle to download an ebook or can I download it on anything? I'm rly trying to cut down on my consumerism and owning so many physical objects so I'd prefer an ebook but clearly I've never read one lmao

I know there’s a free kindle app you can use on your phone, tablet, etc. I’ve never used it since I have a kindle but I think that would work for you.
