I was trying to describe myself to someone

Saw something like this for Every Time I Die. There's a smaller venue within the O2 in London called the Brooklyn Bowl or something like that. ETID played their set to an absolutely rabid crowd (they'd had '68 touring with them too) and when they finished, the venue made it look like it was over. They'd had shit loads of fans get up on stage at the end, everything looked pretty trashed and they put the lights up.

The venue is sort of split up, so there's loads of us in the foyer/bar area collecting jackets and stuff, when we hear ETID on the stereo (can't really hear the stage from that part of the venue). We thought it was pretty strange to play them on the stereo after they just finished, only to look up at the TV screens and see they were back on stage and playing again.

They must have started playing their encore to a half empty room, made more obvious by the lights being on...

These awkward encore stories are killing me. I have never witnessed one firsthand but I always get anxious about it happening

It is cool as fuck when you get an encore that the artist genuinely didn’t plan on doing

The one time I saw TWIABP they had an encore written on the set list but didn’t play it because the crowd immediately started talking/leaving after Heartbeat in the Brain

This happened on the The Chariot farewell tour. Josh said that they never do encores but they were gonna play Yanni Depp because of the energy and that they don't even really know the song that well. Someone took a video of it, I'll post it later.

Real encores are still one of the most exciting things that can happen at a show. I don’t have a problem with them happening as a planned part of the show since it gives the band a minute to freshen up and kind of let the set rest a bit before the finale, I just hate when they really draw it out or make a big fake deal as if the songs aren’t written on the setlist anyway.

It’s always funny when someone runs late so they have to rush or is really into it and doesn’t want to stop so they lampshade the idea by saying, “Pretend I just ran off the stage great wow now I’m back here’s the rest of the set.”

We got a real encore from Sum 41 at Groezrock in 2016. The crowd was going nuts the whole show so they came back on and played Summer and My Direction. I think that's the only time I've experienced a non-planned encore. At least at a show of that size.

  8. I wish I could remember what band it was but a long time ago I saw a band earn a genuine encore but they had already played all of their songs during the set, so they just played one of the songs again lol

The only time I've ever experienced a non-planned encore was at an AFI show a couple years ago, they came out and played their planned encore and then the crowd was just still going crazy like 5 minutes later. They came back out looking genuinely bewildered/happy and played Totalimmortal. It was amazing

A friend of mine saw Modest Mouse like 8 years ago and they genuinely waited an hour to come back and do the encore? I still can't believe people waited that long, I would have absolutely bounced.

My dad saw Brian Regan do an unplanned encore which is a confusing as hell premise

  12. Pretty sure Saosin did this at a show I went to when they first got back together with Anthony some years back. It was before the new album, so they only played their EP and a couple other songs, which was not much, so they ended up playing "Seven Years" like 3 times ha.

  13. Hahaha that rules. They obviously know how many songs they have too, I love the idea that instead of just shortening their set or learning some covers they went all rogue like that. I’d imagine it was a really funny sight

  14. It was insanely fun. Whole crowd loved every minute of it.
