why would it be a formality? is DUP still willing to support Johnson?

Members of other parties don't vote on the political leaders of other parties. Johnson didn't technically win the vote to become Prime Minister. He won the vote to lead his party.

The PM is appointed by the monarch and by tradition, the queen selects the leader of the party who won the most seats in parliament and has formed a government. Currently, that would be the leader of the Tory party, which is now Boris Johnson.

If DUP wants out of its arrangement to form a government now that Johnson is the leader of the Tories, it can make a motion for no confidence. But it does not get a vote on who is elected the leader of the Tories.

btw it is absolutely hilarious that the DUP are such short sighted morons to want Boris in considering the monumental damage a no deal brexit would do to northern ireland

Not suggesting DUP gets a vote on the leader of the Tories

Suggesting if the Tories change their leader, all the MPs should have to vote again to confirm that leader as PM.

  6. I didn't know we were talking about should, there's a lot of dumb shit that happens in Parliament that absolutely should not happen. I think more than MPs, there should just have to be a general election if that happens. Also, the monarchy should be abolished.

I understand, but I am saying that there simply is no mechanism for such a vote in the British system of governance.

The people vote for the PMs. The parties vote for their leaders. And the monarch appoints the PM from the leaders of the party.

The check available to the MPs would be a subsequent vote of no confidence after the PM has been selected, as the Queen is obliged to select a PM who will have the "confidence" of the government.

so they never actually all voted on May in the first place? rather DUP and the Tories went "we have a deal" so the Queen went "okay May is still PM"?

That's correct, if by "they" you mean DUP and the non-Tory MPs.

The Tories voted May as their leader in 2016 after Cameron resigned following the Brexit vote. At that time, the Tories had a ruling majority and so May was appointed PM. She then called for a general election.

After the general election in 2017, the Tories had the most seats, but not a ruling majority. The Tories struck a deal with DUP to obtain the ruling majority required and were allowed to form a government. As May was still the leader of the Tories, she was named PM.
