And her excuse is bullshit. According to the IL Senate Leader, Goodwill would have a waiver to pay less than minimum wage as a charitable organization. So its complete bullshit.

I've actually been following this closely, as I got Lyme disease about 4 years ago and it has subsequently ruined my life. If it comes out that the government is responsible for this, well, I wouldn't be surprised.

I would just like to point out that one of the prohibitions says you can't say the president used a racial slur. That means that if Trump were to go on live TV and say the N word 100 times, it would be against house rules to accurately relate that information on the house floor lol.

Very glad this is being reported about. My youngest brother is autistic and worked for Goodwill for at least 4 years through a disability services group. Last year the service group's contract with Goodwill was suddenly cancelled and my brother as well as 8 other people with special needs that he pooled to work with were laid off. He was devastated, he couldn't understand why he couldn't go to work any more.

I not only hate Goodwill for how they laid him off, I also hate them for how they exploited him for years. Goodwill extolls their record of hiring people with special needs but what they didn't say is that they paid them dirt wages. For whatever reason they had an exemption where they could pay a worker "by the unit" instead of by the hour, ie my brother was paid by how many pieces of clothing he hung up or ticketed. I remember being shocked seeing a paycheck for $9 for 16 hours of work. I would complain to my parents but they couldn't decide whether to do anything about it. I don't blame them, it's so hard to take care of a young adult who is unable to care for themselves, they were just happy that he had coworkers that he enjoyed being with and was socializing, he would stay inside every day if he could otherwise.

I figure Goodwill finally started getting pressured from organizations for this pay structure so they decided to take their ball and go home. Good riddance but I'm scared to death of how our country treats it's special needs population. Thank God my brother has a family that will break their backs to take care of him but there are so many others that are lost in the system.

We have a local box factory that does a similar thing, paying disabled people by the unit, rather than the hour. During the Obama administration, they introduced a bill to get rid of that type of employment, but I'm not sure what happened to it. Either way, it's exploitation and super gross. It's so sad how they're taken advantage of.
