I need to go back to that record. I enjoyed it the first few times through, but haven't spent a ton of time with it.

Given your tastes I expect you'll find a lot to like. Definitely more Americana-leaning songwriting on this one than on their previous records. I prefer it to their previous album for that reason.

To be honest, not into him repeating that line as much as he does on the song. I realize I’m probably in the minority on that one, but it kinda grates on me at times

If I have one complaint about this record, it's that I wish AJ's awesome bridge writing work from War Paint made more of an appearance. The bridges on that record are next-level, and this one doesn't have as much of that.

Listened again yesterday and I wish slow down had different verses instead of repeating the same one twice, but still an incredible record.

I wish they incorporated the Starting Over chorus into Slow Down. Not sure if it would have worked but would have been cool to tie both halves together.

Parachute, No One’s Gonna Need You More, Siren, Waves, Miscommunication...that album is stacked with great bridges.

I think the songwriting in general on war paint is the tightest we’ll ever see from AJ

I love that song but it contains the only Damgerous Summer lyric I dont quite "get":
"I saw my mom die. For the very first time".. I can never quite wrap my head around that one

I've trained my brain to stop hoping they get as high as War Paint ever again. That album is so special (and probably a lot of perfect timing for me too)

Absolutely agree that they reached their pinnacle with WP, but (if they make another album), I wouldn’t be surprised if THAT album is the masterpiece. I adore MN, but there can be some more confident improvements.

That would make more sense. But they arent quite like that. Nor is the punctuation. If you look up the lyrics it's always written:

I saw my mom die for the very first time
She was an angel, God took her from the sky

I think I read somewhere that Weathered is about AJ deciding to do music full time and that it "killed" his mom. That might be a too simplified version of what he said but that was the jist.

So I'm loving this album despite having never really listened to the band before. I really like Reach for the Sun and War Paint too. Haven't dug into the others. Is the consensus that Reach for the Sun is their best work or is War Paint generally held in equally high (or even higher) regard?

Came here to post about how the title track is really doing it for me right now... then I open up the thread and everyone’s already raving about it lol.

    That last minute though...

    If you don't, don't

I really want the ocean mix vinyl but I don't think I can justify a $40 purchase to have it shipped to the UK with customs charge no doubt thrown on top too :(

Blind Ambition might be my favorite track on this now. Maybe a tie between that and Starting Over/Slow Down.
