Played Remember the Name. Not as horrible as a 2019 Ed Sheeran x Eminem x 50 Cent track might seem, but pretty far from good all the same

It's great for the collaboration project that it is. The Stormzy, Khalid, Chris Stapleton & Bruno Mars, Camilla Cabella & Cardi B songs stick out the most so far.

The one I Don’t Care remix is much better than the original

The only thing from this that really stuck with me was Blow (the one with Stapleton and Bruno). This'll probably stay on my gym playlist for the rest of summer.

You can’t deny that he put in the work, wrote good songs, and is lucky. There’s plenty of people that can fit the niche but he just made it.

Lots of people put in the work and write good songs, and still don't get anywhere. I'm sure his wealthy background helped give him a decent break in life.

It's interesting that a supposed part of Sheeran's appeal is that he's a self-made songwriter, when actually, he's written very few of his own songs himself without any outside help. I think there's maybe like 6 songs across his three albums that he wrote on his own?? Multiple songwriters and producers have been used on all of his albums. I'm not saying that's a bad thing- it's just misleading that he's marketed as this amazing solo songwriter when in reality the vast majority of his output is actually the end result of a collaborative process.

Why do you think he is touted as as a great "solo songwriter" versus a great "songwriter?" Seems like a weird distinction that I have never heard be specified

I feel like it's the way he's marketed and his general image. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him without an acoustic guitar in his hands/strapped to his back. His career trajectory kind of reminds me of Taylor Swift: he’s a pop star presented as a singer-songwriter. He's always portrayed as this great songsmith, and it just gives the impression that he's writing all of these tunes on his own. Like whenever people tell me why they like him so much, they'll always cite his songwriting ability. Other artists who contribute just as much to the production of their own songs don't seem to get as much credit. Why is that?

I dunno, I'm not really on board with the path you're going down. He IS a singer-songwriter and he is a pop star. He's also a great songsmith, as you say, regardless of co-writers or not. Seems like a personal problem that you feel jipped at him not always writing by himself

I just think it’s dumb that he’s held up as a great songwriter when a) his songs suck and b) he barely writes any of them without a lot of outside help

You don’t like his music. That’s fine. But saying his songs suck is just your opinion and isn’t conducive to your argument. Taylor has great songs, Ed has great songs. I’m not the biggest fan of either but they connect with people.

Yes Lenin, we are all well aware of your position on the human they call Ed Sheeran by now.

I actually like Taylor a lot! 1989 is a great record.

I was in the gym this morning and You Need Me, I don't Need You came on, and the lyrics in the 2nd verse are literally:

I sing and write my own tune and I write my own verse hell
Don't need another wordsmith to make my tunes sell
    Call yourself a singer-writer, you're just bluffing
Name's on the credits and you didn't write nothing

Therefore, I'm absolutely not imagining that he presents himself as this great "solo" songwriter who does everything himself. Anyone who heard those lyrics without checking the album credits would assume that he is 100% responsible for writing all his own songs. Not only that, but with these lyrics he's seemingly sneering at artists who do work with other writers, when that's exactly what he does himself (particularly on his more recent material)?? So, to go back to the original tweet that was posted, it just makes no sense to me why he is so "insanely fucking famous" when one of his supposed attributes is a myth...
