I think they are still as hard as they used to be. That single just doesn’t do them justice. But that’s nothing new and all of their albums have had slower songs like that.

 

I'm guessing/hoping that it was Metal Blade's decision to release a safer track as the lead single, and that we're going to get harder/riffier tracks deeper into the album. Disarm and Incarnate were pretty similar albums, so hopefully we get something that breaks the KSE mold a bit and takes them to new territory

 

Disarm goes very fucking hard I was legitimately impressed by it despite not being crazy over the last Howard album.

 

Yeah, saying they don’t go hard is a pretty big hot take. They have never strayed too far from their core sound except the S/T. I feel like like they got even heavier when Jesse came back.

 

I guess I should clarify, I'm probably comparing to AOJB, which to me imo, in tone and sound, is still their heaviest, so I'm using that as a barometer to gauge their efforts. I want even riffier riffs on this album, dirtier and heavier ones

 

I don't think it's a hot take when it's a subjective viewpoint. Maybe it's a hot take here, but I haven't been particularly into a KSE album since As Daylight Dies. Most of the scream-sing metalcore from that era hasn't aged well to me so I feel that way generally regardless of which band it is.

ADD is probably the last KSE album I really cared for too. Don’t get me wrong, everything after their second S/T, arguably their weakest, has been solid. However, by the time they got Jesse back and all that, I’ve moved on to other things. Still will go out of my way to see them though, incredible live act.

 

I think killswitch suffers from the "too much of the same" format. It's all too formulaic for me. That being said, The End of Heartache is 100% my favorite metalcore album

 

This could be said about SO many bands.

 

And I think metalcore is one of the biggest offenders in terms of genre. I don't think bands like as I lay dying, shai hulud, between the buried and me, etc ever broke from their molds and tried new things. Hell, I'll even throw every time I die in there. It's not exactly a genre where bands try to grow and evolve. Very few bands come to mind. Maybe poison the well?

You could make an argument that ETID refined their sound rather than grew outright (I’d disagree but I’d listen to an argument), but idk how you can say BTBAM didn’t evolve their sound.

 

I spent last summer revisiting KSE's discography and the only album I ever feel like going back when I want to listen to them is AOJB. I could take or leave all their other albums, although DTD is pretty alright
