Haha. No didn't make the cut. Probably my least favorite on Enema, that or The Party Song.

The Emo verses might have my fave harmonies. I fucking love that song.

 

My family and I were on vacation in Florida. The album dropped the day we were driving back to PA. Of course we had to find a CD store somewhere before heading out - it happened to be a "Camelot Music" in a hugeass mall. I coordinated with my best friend and sister so that we would each get a different version. I got the green jacket. (A few pages back someone posted the little stickers that came on these, and seeing that was a rush of nostalgia. The Mark silhouette sticker stayed on my Walkman until it died.) I've never been so excited to listen to an album. And I had a long drive to get lost in the music. I don't think I've ever loved an album more on first listen as much as I loved TOYPAJ. Sixteen and listening to an album that would define me, every song hit so hard. I'll never forget hearing the intro to STFTK and thinking "Holy Shit, this is incredible!" Tensions rising in my family, it just hit me even harder. I've always identified with these guys, and TOYPAJ is just so special. Choosing between that and Enema is near impossible and really just depends on my mood. Happy 18th.

 

It would've been just as funny if it was "I wanna see some naked girls" but you know, if they did that someone would say it's sexist, so like...

How about nobody, let alone someone in their 40s, write a "joke" song where objectifying someone is the punchline? And then it's just a double whammy when someone who isn't gay uses being gay as a punchline while also objectifying the make believe people in the song. Maybe I would expect a song like this to be written by a middle schooler or blink circa 1999, but how do you not see this as problematic 1) when it's 2019 and 2) when it's pathetically sung by a 40something year old dude in an attempt to be funny like he thought he was in the "glory days" of the band?

Trust me, I think a lot of people overreacted on certain things but I will speak up when using someone's sexual orientation as a punchline. It's not funny.

I agree on this. In 2019 these joke songs are not okay. They are the worst part of California by far, and I will pretty much always skip them. I’m hoping Mark realized they aren’t funny, aren’t needed, and are just dumb/wrong since they aren’t doing them on the new album reportedly. But back before I bought vinyl, every copy of Cali I made removed those songs, even when I was burning them for someone else.

I don't think the joke of "Built this Pool" is about being gay though. It's that he went to the length of building a pool just to try to see some naked dudes. To those of you who are saying it's offensive, is that because you know Mark is heterosexual?

I think they picked a bad live version to put on an official release of their album. I really don't like that specific recording. There's that part in it that sounds like Matt forgets the words for a second and then quickly remembers them and sings them out of time. They should have done a studio recording of the acoustic version of BTD or picked a different live recording. Or at least touched up that version a little bit. At least it's at the very end of the album, I guess. Whenever I've gotten that far into the album, it always catches me off guard because I forget it's on there.
