I do miss the days of going to music shops like that though

I don’t think I ever paid less than $25 for a new CD here in Canada.

The prices were a big part of the reason I started downloading music once I learned about file sharing.

I've never seen a CD that was more than $25 unless it was an import

Most HMV CDs were in the teens. Futureshop/Best Buy had some around 9.99 price point

I remember paying $21 (plus tax) for Hello Nasty back in the day and it was the most I've ever paid for a CD.

Getting a new cd on release day was one of the best feelings ever, I’ve gotten into vinyl recently and it’s a similar feeling but not quite the same

Browsing the Best Buy and Target ads to see what new release was going to be $6.99.

My first CD was OPM - Heaven Is A Halfpipe in 2000, I was underage and the guy at the counter ID'd me because of the swear words and I ended up saying my Mum would buy it even though she wasn't with me. He ended up giving me the single and I felt like such a rebel!

It’s true. That feeling you got of saving up cash, running into the store, buying it, unwrapping it in the car, and popping it into the CD player was phenomenal. It felt earned which always makes the payoff better.

Now I buy vinyl or stream and though I like both formats for different reasons, nothing comes close to that “rush” or whatever it was.

  10. Was? At the FYE in the mall here, CDs are priced between $15-23 with the majority closer to $20. It’s hilarious.

Oh I did get to feel that again in 2017 too. I was at a record shop in Baltimore and they had black mile to the surface on cd a week before it’s release and it hadn’t leaked yet. Felt great to buy the cd and listen to it on the 2 hour ride home!

I still remember buying Untitled (and Jay Z's black album) at lunchtime while I was at college. Spending the rest of the day with them in my bag waiting to go home was the height of excitement haha.

Did you guys have a Media Play? We had one right across the street from HS/MS and would go all the time after.

I got all my compact discs from either Borders or Sam Goody. RIP both.

There's a local record shop in my area that used to sell CDs on the Friday before the Tuesday before they came out. For years, I would go every Friday to buy CDs and felt like the world's biggest bad ass bumping music in my car for five days before anyone else.

Between that place and Borders, one CD could have been anywhere from $16 to $20 easily.

Also was a big fan of the Best Buy 6.99 sale every week tho.

  17. I was borderline obsessed with Media Play. I'd go there as much as humanly possible. Before I had to pay rent and back when it only cost me $15 bucks to fill up my car with gas, I'd blow my entire paycheck at Media Play, haha.

When Media Play was closing for good, I was so bummed... But then it became an FYE and my heart was rebuilt! And then when FYE eventually closed years later, it became a Dicks Sporting Goods, and I never stepped foot into that building again...

My source of CDs back in the day was FYE in the mall, Best Buy and Hot Topic. Nowadays it’s online for vinyl of course but even when I bought cds in the last years only Best Buy still has them (fye closed and hot topic doesn’t sell in store anymore)

I still buy CDs at my local record store for my car, I unfortunately don't have time to listen to my records.

  20. I buy stuff on vinyl, if I know I love the album already. Otherwise, I still buy CDs because they're cheaper. I usually buy them at Target, Amazon, or from shows. Now that I am officially out of room for new vinyl though, I don't have much of a choice anymore. It's gonna be strictly CDs for awhile until I can get rid of some records...

I honestly buy vinyl just to collect and support the artist, really. With streaming, 99% of the time, I'm listening to music on my phone (at work, in the car, at home through Google Home). I have hundreds of LPs but very rarely do I get the chance to actually sit down and listen to them...a few nights a month, maybe? If that. And out of that, only a handful of albums I've actually played through twice. It's more of an addiction to buy vinyl than it is to actually listen.

I found this small but perfect three shelf metal rack on amazon for like 19.00. It’s bormaly meant for kitchen appliances but it works great for records and it’s small

I was including tax in the $25 price. I frequently bought punk/ska CDs at Best Buy and Sam the Record Man for $22 or $23.99. A lot of my old jewel cases at my parents’ house actually still have the stickers on them. They’re criminal to look back on.

I never shopped at Best Buy or Future Shop because they never carried the majority of what I was looking for at the time.
