He realizes that his toxic viewpoint toward women is completely fucked because his ridiculous reactions to her ex's drives her away. He realizes the error of his ways because of how insane he's treating the situation. It's not that he becomes a better person by fighting her ex's, he becomes a better person because he realizes that everything he's been doing for the entire movie (and his entire life up to that point) is wrong.

I'm not saying that he doesn't become a better person, but the way he becomes one is inherently flawed. What if he was a good guy? What if Scott Pilgrim was a nice guy, single, not problematic at all, and then meets Ramona? He'd still have to defeat her ex's. He'd still have to earn her like a god damn prize.

No see I'm saying that that entire premise only happens because that's how he himself views the situation. Because of the way he views/treats women. The fights are just standing in for the fact that he can't accept Ramona's past and needs to treat every single story about an ex as a huge fight. "Defeat her ex's" just means "get over his immature hang-ups and stop treating women like things".
