Just saw it last week actually. Liked it a lot but I was watching it at 1AM when I was already feeling drowsy so I had to pause it a lot and get up to keep my brain active.

the only denis movie i do not fuck with is arrival tbh

 

He's portrayed negatively for most of the movie but has an arc where he becomes a better person and is "redeemed" at the end. Now, we can debate whether someone like him is worthy of redemption in the first place, which he might not be, but the movie shows him being a complete shitheel and then at the end he grows as a person.

But that's all wrapped up in why he's such a bad guy. He treats her like a prize to be won, and he completely ignores her agency as a person by constantly fighting with her about her ex's and criticizing her past like he has any right to. During every fight he's always turning to her and being like "this guy?" and forcing her to explain herself. Not to mention the fact that in his mind this is all some kind of absurd video game is really telling about what kind of person he is and how poorly-adjusted he is.

He's ultimately just as much of a manipulative/controlling villain as Gideon and the rest of the ex's. The movie just gives him the chance to become better (which, again, is its own separate conversation about whether he really earns it in the movie).

 

I like arrival a lot. My wife and I watched it together and it was really touching.

I feel as if the second part of your post really illustrates why his redemption in the first part of your post is completely unearned, but as you said, that's a separate conversation.

Even though Scott Pilgrim is the one treating her as prize to be won, the movie itself is entirely constructed upon this premise! It's not as if he's some douche who says I'm gonna go kick the ass of everyone you've ever dated and goes and does it and then she's into him all of a sudden... He has to do it. The plot forces him into doing this. If he wants to date her, he must defeat her former relationships. And through that, he has personal growth? Get out of here! The whole premise is completely fucked.
