i didnt speed up the song, i just transposed them all up 32 cents (just a very slight variance in pitch), which brings the entire record to the normal 440Hz ratio. and this sounds better because 99% of all the music we listen to in western culture has been that way. so in theory, its what our brains are more a custom to (im guessing), hence everyones grievance with the self titled record.

listen to my version and the original back to back and see which one you prefer, delete the one you dont.

I was admittedly nervous about the production (mostly vocal production) when the singles started coming out, but in context of this entire thing, it disappeared.

This thing is so so so good. My only wish, is that the title track was moved to the closer. I love the way that song ends.

I also like the singles a lot more in the context of the record.

it’s a bit of a hard concept to grasp if you don’t exactly understand what frequency is/means. in the simplest terms frequency = pitch. when you play middle a on a piano, if the piano is perfectly in tune, it occurs at the frequency 440hz. A flat occurs at 415.30. So if the band is tuned at 432hz, they aren’t a half step down, they’re in between steps. As was pointed out, western music is largely all tuned at 440hz. Our ears are accustomed to notes being tuned to whatever frequency they’re at based on 440hz being the standard. So when TDS deviated from that on s/t it was noticeable to a lot of us because were so used to the standard and even though we can’t exactly point out what it is without doing some deeper investigating we know something is just “off” about it.

Hmm interesting. Wonder what was the justification for that? Purposeful or a trip up? Sounds okay to me.

Sam said it was on purpose and they wanted to do it again but he didn’t lol

And it definitely doesn’t sound bad or wrong or anything but for someone like me who does audio production shit (I used to do a lot more than I do now but I’ve retained some knowledge about it) it’s something I noticed

So when I preordered this album it was because my relationship was on the rocks and the singles were really lifting me up. Well as of 2 hours ago that relationship finally came to an end. My head is spinning and this is the worst feeling and all I wanted is for one of my friends to pick up the damn phone and calm me down, but it's midnight on a Sunday and everyone's asleep. So I put this album back on. That voicemail straight up is a dagger to my heart. The album is having this weird effect of both vocalizing how fucking low I feel right now, but on top of music that makes me feel like I can conquer the world.

Is anyone on here going to the NYC show solo? I need to see them, but going to a show alone while you already feel lonely sounds like the worst thing right now. If you're looking for a show buddy, first rounds on me.

I got you. I didnt mean speed up. I did mean pitch raised. I think it's a personal thing. Some people are bothered by it not being at the norm pitch. But for me, in theory, the fact that it is only down a semitone shouldnt matter at all. If you go camping let's say without a tuner and you have to tune a guitar by ear. Theres a chance the guitar could be tuned not a half step low. But a semitone lower and you could play the entire camping trip and it would sound normal to me and I believe most people. When you got back home you would hook up to a tuner and be slightly slightly lower. I believe that the ear adjusts.

with all the discussion of the tuning and sound of the self titled I swear by my opinion that the actual songs are excellent. not as good as this, but definitely better than GR. This Is Life is some of AJ's best lyrics

"I used to hold that chain, I used to carry the weight of all my problems here with me, but now I come through"

One of my favorite songs they've done in a long time... it's like RFTS 2.0, but the bigger parts of the song are just way more "immense." It's like, in the same vein but there's a certain progression and growth in their sound. Idk, really good...

Edit: Ohhh man, some of you guys got the album early huh??

AJ: I will make it legal!

I would agree but man I can't stand the Way he delivers the chorus on that song. Just sounds... like bored almost?

It's so good. Infinite is like a religious experience. That kick in till the end may be their finest moment ( have not heard the full new album yet tho!)

That 440 version of s/t sounds so much cleaner and sharp than the standard version on Spotify.

You can immediately tell the difference from the first few notes on Colors.

The lyrics are truly fantastic (even in concert to how great they have been in the past). Because the music is more prominent on this record it's taken longer to catch some of the special lines, but it lends itself to more longevity. I still haven't started to love this record like most of you seem too, but it certainly has some highlights.

    Another lyric I really like:
    “but i must be weak
    if you couldn’t tell, I couldn’t breathe”

It’s really simple but it is such an AJ line and his delivery works so well. Reminds me of some of his writing on War Paint.

When is that show? As someone also going through a tough time, I could be a show buddy. Haven’t bought a ticket just yet.
