I guess TDS is closest to a pop rock classification, in which case I also think their songwriting is stronger than most other pop rock bands

I just started listening to them this week after long thinking they were a super generic pop punk/rock band. Can confirm they’re not haha. I’ve enjoyed all the previous records so far. Lots of good vocal melodies and fun guitar work.

I was always a casual fan of this band since War Paint came out and then I completely forgot about this band after they disbanded and didn’t keep up with them when they came back, but I’m glad I checked this album out because this album is really great and now I wanna spend more time with the band’s discography this week

Gratz on the race. I would make an identical playlist. I used to live in AZ and would hike all the time. I would always put on Infinite just as I hit the summit of my hikes and would be alone on top of a mountain screaming ''I STARTED BLEEDING COLOR ONCE AGAINNNN..." There's quite a bit that doesn't resonate with me on self-titled, but that portion always hit me just as hard as anything in the entire catalog.

Question for Sam: I've noticed so far with the Drums there are awesome sounds, and really solid memorable beats, but less fills than usual. was there a focus on more memorable beats and emotion or any reason there is less complex fills than the last two albums? Not a negative tho. The drums are slammin and sound better than ever

Ben is a really good drummer. Unfortunately he’s TOO good. Therefore it’s a process of tastefully dumbing down the parts. I really made Ben understand how to play to THE song instead of playing drums ON TOP of a song. It’s all really small but super important shit. Crash hit choices. When and where. Drum fills, what is he signaling to the band? How can he drive the emotion correctly and also reinforce the lyrical rhythm... these are all the things that I’m focused on at all times. When he plays I can immediately hear the missed opportunities and together we just work it out and find out what’s best for the song. I’m really proud of his performances and tones and all his parts. He leveled up a good 3 or 4 levels higher than most drummers do when they come here.

okay third listen this album has REALLY grown on me. It's a truly impressive work. Starting to latch onto some of the lyrics a bit more too.

i also felt something about their self titled album was off, so i played around in logic and bumped it from 432Hz to 440Hz. it sounds so much better to my ears. heres a download link, i feel youll all agree its a big audible improvement. i also formatted it for itunes with some new art so you can tell it apart from the original version.

Can you explain why it sounds off tho? When a band lowers something by a half step or even less it's really not that noticable unless you a/b it to a sped up version. The problem with speeding it up after is it raises his voice too. Whereas when they recorded it you are hearing his actual voice singing to a slightly detuned guitar. So why would that sound off? The guitar is in tune. If a band says hey instead of key of A, let's do Key of G. That's a really big difference. I'm just trying to figure out why a semi tone lowered matters or even is perceptible. Songs are in many different keys. If someone is sooo used to Key of E and standard tuning I can imagine a semitone lower than " True E" would be noticable but shouldn't sound off? Seeing if you can elaborate

The difference between any given note at 440 hz vs 432 hz is *mostly* imperceptible, but it does exist. It’s less than a half step difference in tone which is the smallest interval that exists in western music. In East Asia and India something called quarter tones do exist. Like the distance between C and C# is a half step but a quarter tone would be in between C and C#, which doesn’t exist on most of our instruments

We're not talking about the difference of keys or semitones. The guitars are being tuned to a slightly different standard pitch across all keys.

It's subtle, but 432 seems off because there's a very strong precedent of 440 hz in Western music. It could even potentially throw the whole arrangement off depending on your preference. Conversely, some people prefer 432, so if you like it, there's nothing wrong with that.

For sure. And good response and info here. Thank you for that. I guess the point is, the first 3 Metallica albums or maybe even 4 before the black album are a half step lower. So the songs in E on their guitars are actually E flat but they dont sound off compared to Enter Sandman which is in standard tuning and actually E. If it is a semitone down then it would be even less a chance of sounding off. Not sure why A.J and the band was wanting to do this tho in first place ?

My opinion is sometimes in forums there is a mob mentality where someone says they read TDS recorded this a semitone lower. Than someone feels it sounds off knowing this. Then many people start parroting that it sounds off and we are off to the races. Not to discredit or say how it sounds to you tho. I think it sounds perfectly normal, so to each their own lol. And I know this is the epitome of first world problems haha

Okay, so in this example, Metallica are a semi-tone down but still in 440 hz.

You see what I'm saying here?

With 432 hz, instead of tuning the low string to Eb, you would tune the string a tiny bit flatter than what your standard, 440 hz based-tuner would say is in tune because the standard pitch uses less vibrations.

It's a small stylistic choice. It really irks some people tho. There's almost a naturopathic line of thinking behind 432 hz, with people claiming it has healing powers or whatever but it's mostly bullshit tbh.

432 hz doesn't really bother me personally. It's benign.

I never realized what it was that bothered me about self-titled, but I put the whole discog on shuffle for a 10-mile run today, and yep, those songs sound off. I don't have perfect pitch, or even really relative pitch, but it's definitely noticeable.
