You aren’t a real fan unless you listen to this 10 times a day!

I thought in that Get Over It documentary, they stated that James and Grant were never a part of recording in the past right? So will this new album be the first they are involved in?

They said that but the past studio docs show differently.

    I do not exist.

I thought they said they were part of recording but not writing. Whereas this time they didn't get them in to record their parts.

Right? I haven't watched the making of Lost in the Sound in awhile, but I thought I remembered everyone being there.

Ah, that makes more sense. Either way, kind of a shitty move even though I can't say I don't love the end result.

    I wouldn’t say it’s bad, it’s just forgettable.

2018 was an incredible year for music so it’s bound to happen but here we are still talking about it and the band in 2019! It’s says something!

I think they have done an incredible job of keeping the momentum going since they got back together, no matter what their music sounds like.

Their tours have been huge lately! I wish I was able to catch them on their 2nd leg where they played Fault Line and I Gave Up. Those sounds looked incredible from what I saw on youtube....

i hope they keep mixing up the sets more in the future. i guess when bands get bigger and/or start to play to new audiences they often "dilute" their setlist quite a bit but as much as i love TOCS/DTGL their setlist had gotten starved for some creativity.

Definitely. Calling this the biggest disappointment in all of music seems a little silly, at least to me.

I love DTGL, LITSOS, and Disambiguation. I even still love TOCS despite the fact that everything they've done since has been better and stronger and despite it not aging as well. We'll still always have those albums.

It's just hard for me to comprehend the level of hate this release has generated. It's been almost 10 years since Disambiguation. It shouldn't be a surprise that they wanna do something different. I'm not just talking about here but from their fanbase in general. It's like if you're from a metalcore band you're not allowed to grow as musicians and try new things or something. You can't write more accessible stuff or you'll get eaten alive. That's what annoys me. I've said it before and I will say it again: We saw this change coming as far back as Sunburnt and Unsound.

And let's be real here: If this wasn't Underoath but another band, people would love this. It's still good, but because it's not Disambiguation or LITSOS part 2 everybody wants to shit on it.

It does seem true that some bands get a pass to experiment and do something different while other bands are held to make the same sound over and over.

nailed it. i remember when sunburnt/unsound were released i told myself an album full of tracks like that would be good but not what i wanted. then erase me came out and it was even more of a change than those 2, so it was even more jarring/disappointing. but viewed in a vacuum this album is pretty damn good. far from perfect, sure, but it has some of their best songs that wouldn't feel too out of place on other albums. the disappointment in this album for me came from me wanting a timeless, heavy metalcore release and wanting UO to deliver it. they gave us something else, but the disappointment is decidedly not in the quality of the songs (well, not all of em...).

If this wasn’t Underoath I would still hate it lol saying that is ridiculous. To me it’s a regressive album that isn’t interesting to me at all, especially with how out of the box Disambiguation was. It was one of my biggest disappointments with how much I loved the last two albums.

That's totally fair. If it's not your thing it's not your thing. Most of my anger stems from the people who went out of their way to tell the band that they shouldn't have gotten back together if this is what they ended up making and how much it sucks. Compared to other fans online, you all have been downright tame in your comments about it

I'm bitter about the reception in general and what the band went through when it was released. So if I seem a bit unfairly angry I apologize.

I really like this album but I didn't come in as a fan of the band so I get being disappointed from that perspective. And yeah, no one should be saying stuff like that to the band but also people are more than welcome to think this is bad or disappointing, no need to be policing reactions to it

I'm not policing reactions to it. People are allowed to not like it. I just dont get the degree to which it is considered bad is all.

There's nothing wrong with bands experimenting and/or changing styles over years or decades, I even encourage it, but doing that doesn't mean whatever they release isn't impervious to criticism. I was never a huge Underoath fan but have a handful of tracks I love from them but still found this album boring and behind the times and I have little to no intimate connection to them.

I mean, you called it hyperbole that someone would say it's bad haha. Didn't the other guy just say on the last page that it's all subjective? Not sure why that doesn't seem to extend to people who disagree with you

We reach for the longest shadow

Just wanted to highlight this because I see it so often. If a band changes up the sound and people don't like it, "fanboys" (for lack of a better term) always come back with, "You just don't like change! You want them to sound the same forever!" To which I respond, "I'm fine with them changing it up, but this is not good any way you look at it." letlive.'s last album had this back and forth a lot.

Anyway. I forgot this album existed. It's fine, but as someone else said, too much good stuff came out last year and this year so far that I would MUCH rather listen to.

I think the frustration lies in people stating things as fact versus opinion. People may be stating their opinion, and that is absolutely fine, but other people are not reading it as such and it’s just a simple matter of miscommunication. As I mentioned before, music is EXTREMELY subjective and we just have to convey our opinions in ways that are respectful to those that may disagree with us.

Literally everything on this forum is an opinion lol, no one here thinks their opinion is fact, thus there’s no “stating as fact” going on here. C’mon, I can’t believe this needs to be explained.

Maybe we should all change our little quote over here

    <-------------

to something like "In my opinion..." so people reading left to right can put that at the beginning of every sentence.
