Kevin from Topshelf went off on twitter the other day and he’s apologizing which is a nice thing to do but imo his rant was completely warranted

Like I see every major TE and RFC band get posted everywhere (ie would hear about outside of this thread) but would not hear about Topshelf releases were it not for this thread/me being actively interested in their shit and searching it out myself (which sometimes means remembering to go to their website to check their discography page to see if I missed anything, which is something I generally shouldn’t have to do with how Online I am lol)

I’m not sure what the solution to this is but I can’t even imagine how many other labels of a similar/lesser size struggle just to alert people to music they (me) actively wanna hear, can’t help but feel like there’s gotta be a better way? Stereogum can’t cover everything but maybe more posts about new music and less about celeb gossip? Idk

I guess the point of this post is a big up to TGE, Post-Trash and Phluff for highlighting smaller bands in a cool way and wondering if you folks have any suggestions of how to find music without the help of major pubs

    hey you lil piss baby

This is probably the bitter part of me speaking, but it seems like once pubs like Pitchfork, Stereogum, The Fader, etc. started to give a shit about "emo," the smaller pubs and blogs really got flushed away. And those big sites cover such a wide breadth of music that they just get to pick and choose what they want to write about. When I was doing Sanctuary with other AP folks, I was making a point to cover as much as I possibly could from labels like Topshelf, CYLS, Tiny Engines, etc., whether it was a 2 song 7" or a full length album. And now that bigger pubs are picking up on these bands, it's even harder for people to come around and start a new site/blog specializing in this stuff because most people will get their fill from the limited scope promoted by the bigger pubs. Seems like to really gain any traction in covering this scene now you need to have some sort of gimmick (like that small album reviews twitter or whatever, no shade though, you do you hustle).

I don't know where I'm going with this post and I feel like I've just started ranting now, but Kevin's initial tweets and your post woke up that part of that's annoyed all these pubs now give a shit this scene that I used to bust my ass trying to put out a steady stream of coverage on when no one was really paying attention.

Yeah, I think that’s spot on. Most will be happy with the limited bands they’re exposed to by those sites and the demo that wants more than that may not be large enough to support a smaller blog or allow them to thrive, it’s a tough situation really which is why I’m pulling for sites like The Grey Estates and Phluff to hopefully make a dent

Is anyone on here really excited for the Ratboys LP3? Apparently it is all written (I was told this back at the end of December). I am a big fan and am seeing them for the second time on the Pup tour tonight (I'm not a huge Pup fan but gotta support Ratboys!). The new songs they are playing (Julia played a few at a solo show last month too) are really good.
